The Witches Redemption

The Strange Friend

By Lyrria HoneyPublished 4 months ago 1 min read

As Vivian began racing to the forest to find even the slightest refuge, she found none. When she finally stopped, her legs trembled from exhaustion. She chose a hollow between twisted roots and gathered what wood she could find. Whispering a spell, she coaxed a small flame to life, the fire’s glow casting nervous shadows on the bark around her.

She stared into the flicker, thoughts drifting to the boy’s family and her own. Were they safe from their oppressors, or had the same cruelty found them too? The questions gnawed at her as much as the hunger in her belly.

That’s when she heard it, a low, almost mournful growl from the darkness. Her hand shot to the dagger at her side. The firelight caught the glint of eyes, not human watching her from just beyond the light.

The figure stepped forward, revealing a creature like a wolf but larger, with a jagged scar running down its flank. Its fur was matted, and it limped slightly, yet its gaze was steady. For a moment, they simply regarded each other, two wounded souls, caught in a world that had shown them no kindness.

The creature didn’t attack. Instead, it lowered itself to the ground, lying just at the edge of the fire’s warmth. Slowly, cautiously, Vivian let her grip on the dagger loosen. Perhaps, in this strange and hostile world, she had found something rarer than safety.

A strange friend.
