Imagine a world of infinite possibilities. To finally grasp the things we cannot see.

What was beyond this world? The understanding and knowledge that existed only scratched the surface. Imagine accessing knowledge one couldn’t even fathom accessing? Secrets. Dreams. The unreachable depths of the mind.

The possibilities of what could become of the telepathic device were infinite.

The telepathic device had grown into Dr. Maddox’s secret obsession and at one time, it nearly cost Insight.

He placed the device in its dedicated and secluded location that he reserved for it. He pondered what visions the device revealed to him. Glimpses of a strange world. The cell phone. If only he could gain access to that mysterious device again. What other strange devices existed within Donovan’s realm?

He continued to let his drifting mind entertain him with the possibilities. His eyes widened in concerning realization. If Donovan returned to where he came from, there was no guarantee that he wouldn’t share information about the telepathy device.

It was a must that Donovan not leave Illumina.

Dr. Maddox sat in his quarters deep in thought as he mindlessly flipped the telepathic device between his fingers.

Life had returned somewhat to normalcy. While the catastrophic failure that Illumina had endured was over, the system wasn’t completely resolved. The disturbance shields and the expedite system were both still faulty and not functioning. Communication still involved spontaneous glitches but it was nowhere near as disruptive as it was before.

He closed his eyes reflecting on the visions of the strange world he had seen and smiled contently. Even after such a disabling shut down, Dr. Maddox had no concerns. The Pulse system of Illumina would be restored. It was the most powerful and advanced technology Insight has ever created.

So this was the world Donovan was from. A world consisting of strange and unfathomable technologies unheard of. A world where Donovan was very likely trying to return to. Probably from the very moment he found himself here.

What other sorts of technologies did Donovan’s world have besides that strange technology he called a cell phone? Such a peculiar name for a device. Was the technology there as advanced as it is here? Not as advanced? What if it was more advanced? Far more advanced than imaginable?

He could not allow Donovan to return to the world where he was from. Not when he had knowledge of the telepathic device he helped create.

Gripping it, he stared at the telepathic device in deep contemplation. Imagine if knowledge of this sort of technology found its way into another world. What if those from Donovan’s world obtained knowledge of the telepathic device from Donovan upon his return. Donovan’s intense excitement of their technologies had proven that his ability to keep their technologies confidential was very concerning.

Worse yet, what if they figured out how to freely access the portal and attempt to steal other technologies of Insight’s? What if they figured out how to replicate his telepathic device? His secretive telepathic project he was so dedicated in creating would be exposed and his time at Insight would be over.

He tightened his grip on the device. Why must his telepathic project be so severely misunderstood.

He placed the device in a safe and secluded spot. He had to think of an offer that would persuade Donovan to stay indefinitely in Illumina.

Donovan was only the start of his concerns. He had his growing suspicions that Nova was involved in a plan to help Donovan return to where he was from and it involved that time machine. He placed the telepathic device on hoping any visuals would confirm his suspicions before leaning back contently. He could not let that happen, but he needed to deal with Donovan first.

“I’d like to have a brief word with you, Donovan. Alone.” Dr. Maddox said the second he caught Donovan leaving the lab. He smiled as if he was about to make Donovan an irresistible offer that he’d be foolish to refuse.

Donovan nodded hesitantly. He could only suspect it had something to do with the telepathic device.

“You have brought Insight a wealth of knowledge and have proven your worth. I will continue to personally teach you all you need to know from the ground up. Just as I did when you first started here.” He flashed a reassuring smile. “How would you like to be next in line after me at our wondrous tech research facility? I will make a spot for you at the top, personally. ”

Donovan shook his head, disturbed by Dr. Maddox’s offer. “I couldn’t.”

Dr. Maddox became more persistent. “Donovan, I don’t think you understand how beneficial you would be here if you continued to stay at Insight Technologies. I’ve seen a glimpse into your world Donovan, and it has fascinated me beyond words! I can only imagine what more I would see if I were to step into it just as you did when you stepped foot in Illumina.”

A sudden chill fell over Donovan and his tone became hushed. “I can’t stay here. I don’t belong here.”

Dr. Maddox gave him a pressing stare before he finally turned to leave. “Spend some time considering your decision. I’m only going to give you this one opportunity. Maybe you’ll reconsider.”

A maddening rush of thoughts overwhelmed Donovan. He never should have initiated a position here. He never should have stepped one foot into Insight. He never should have gone on that fateful late-night walk. The best thing he could do was to satisfy Dr. Maddox and lower his suspicions while he desperately worked with Nova in secrecy to reopen the portal so he could go home.

“Alright. I’ll stay,” Donovan spoke in defeat knowing in his heart it was a promise he’d have to break.

Dr. Maddox flashed a broad smile. “I assure you that your decision to stay will be well worth it.”

I really loved your story. I just published mine — would love your opinion.

  • This was gripping from start to finish! The tension between Maddox and Donovan crackles with unease, and the ethical questions behind the telepathic device are fascinating. Can’t wait to read more from Insight!

The quiet brilliance of this story lies in how it explores the cost of knowing too much—of feeling everything too deeply. The character’s gift becomes a mirror for our own hidden fears and hopes. Mysterious, immersive, and unexpectedly emotional—this was telepathy with the reader, too.
