*Some people enter your life for a reason you don’t understand… until it’s too late.*

It was the beginning of winter when Zara moved into the old apartment building on Maple Street. She was starting over—new city, new job, new life. Her past was something she didn’t talk about. She just wanted peace, silence, and a fresh start. The building was quiet, filled with older people and a few young families. Her apartment was 6A, on the sixth floor. Right across the hall was apartment 6B.She never saw who lived there. The door was always shut. The lights were off. No one came or left. Just a small wooden sign hung on the door with a name: "Rehan."

Chapter 1: A Knock in the Dark

One night, around 1 a.m., Zara heard a soft knock on her door.

*Knock. Knock.*

She froze. It was too late for visitors. She quietly walked to the door and peeked through the peephole. No one was there. But on the floor, she found a note. It said: **“Sorry if I disturbed you. I’m Rehan. Just wanted to say hello. — 6B”**

She smiled, a little surprised. Maybe he was just shy or lonely. She replied the next morning with a note of her own: *“Nice to meet you, Rehan. — Zara, 6A”* She left it outside his door. When she came back from work, the note was gone.

Chapter 2: Messages Without Faces

Days passed, and Rehan never showed his face. But he started leaving little messages under her door. Nothing creepy—just small, thoughtful notes.

> “Hope your job is going well today.”

> “It’s raining. Don’t forget your umbrella.”

> “You seem strong. Keep going.”

Zara began to look forward to his notes. She started leaving messages back.

> “Thank you, Rehan. You’re kind.”

> “How do you always know when I need those words?”

> “Why don’t we talk in person?”

But he never responded to that last question.

Chapter 3: The Man Who Wasn’t There

One evening, Zara saw the landlord fixing something in the hallway. She asked casually, “Does Rehan in 6B live alone?” The landlord paused, looking confused. “6B?” he said. “No one lives in 6B.”

Zara laughed nervously. “That’s impossible. We’ve been leaving each other notes.” The landlord shook his head. “Ma’am, that apartment has been empty for two years. The last tenant—Rehan—died in a car crash. Nice guy. It was a shock to everyone.”Zara’s heart dropped.

Chapter 4: The Note That Changed Everything

That night, she didn’t sleep. The next morning, she found one last note under her door. It read:

> *“Thank you for answering. Most people ignore me. But your kindness reminded me I mattered. You helped me let go. I won’t trouble you anymore. Be happy. You deserve it. — Rehan”* Tears filled her eyes. He was gone. For real this time. She opened the door to 6B. For the first time, it was unlocked. Dusty. Empty. Silent. But on the floor, in the corner, she saw a small envelope with her name. Inside was a photograph of Rehan—smiling—and a note written in the same handwriting:

*“Sometimes, the lost ones just need someone to remember them.”*

Epilogue: The Light in the Hallway

Zara never heard from Rehan again. But something changed in her.She started smiling at strangers. Helping her neighbors. Saying kind words, just like Rehan did for her. The hallway no longer felt cold. She even kept the wooden nameplate from 6B on her bookshelf—to remember the stranger who reminded her how powerful kindness can be. And every time someone asked her why she moved into this building, she smiled and said,“I came here to start over. But I stayed because someone reminded me I wasn’t alone.”

The End.

This story's getting interesting. Reminds me of that time I had an anonymous neighbor leaving little notes. Can't wait to see where it goes.
