The Rise of Julian Mantle

Chapter - 2

By kamleshPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

An emergency meeting convened, filling the firm's boardroom with an air of tension. Old man Harding, the patriarch of the legal empire, broke the silence.

"I have grave news to share," he began, his voice heavy with concern. "Julian Mantle suffered a severe heart attack in court while arguing the Air Atlantic case. He's currently in the intensive care unit, but the doctors say he'll recover. However, Julian has made a decision—he's leaving our family and giving up his law practice. He won't be returning."

The room fell into stunned silence. Julian's abrupt departure left me reeling. Despite his troubles, I had never anticipated him quitting. What stung most was the impersonal way he had handled it. He wouldn't allow me to see him in the hospital, avoiding my calls. I couldn't help but wonder if I reminded him of a life he wanted to forget. The pain ran deep.

That episode occurred over three years ago. Julian vanished from our world, embarking on an enigmatic journey to India. He sought to simplify his life, yearning for answers in that mystical land. He sold his mansion, his plane, and his private island. Even his cherished Ferrari found a new owner. Julian Mantle, once a legal titan, had become an Indian yogi—a transformation that left me awestruck.

As the years passed, I evolved from an overworked young attorney to a seasoned, somewhat jaded veteran of the legal world. My wife, Jenny, and I started a family, prompting a shift in my perspective. My father's words echoed in my mind: "On your deathbed, you'll never wish you spent more time at the office." I began to devote more time to my family and personal life, settling into an ordinary but contented existence. I joined the Rotary Club, played golf on Saturdays, and maintained a semblance of balance. Yet, during quiet moments, my thoughts often drifted to Julian, and I wondered about his fate since our abrupt parting.

Two months ago, an unexpected visitor disrupted my routine. I had just concluded a grueling day with a client when Genevieve, my astute legal assistant, delivered an urgent message.

"Someone's here to see you, John," she said, her voice tinged with urgency. "He insists it's crucial, and he won't leave until he speaks with you."

I hesitated, my patience waning. "I'm about to grab a meal and then finish the Hamilton brief. I don't have time for impromptu meetings right now. Tell him to schedule an appointment like everyone else, and contact security if he becomes troublesome."

"He's adamant about seeing you and won't take no for an answer."

Reluctantly, I agreed to meet the persistent visitor. The door creaked open, revealing a man in his thirties, exuding youthful vitality and confidence. His appearance reminded me of the flawless law school peers, privileged and groomed for success. Yet, beneath the exterior of youth and charm, an aura of profound serenity emanated from him, rendering him almost divine.

For a moment, we locked eyes, his piercing blue gaze dissecting my very soul. I suspected he was another ambitious lawyer vying for my position. A sense of apprehension crept in, and I pondered whether calling security might have been a prudent choice.

Eventually, he spoke with an air of authority, his words resonating with wisdom. "Is this how you treat all your visitors, John? Even those who once imparted the secrets of success in the courtroom? Perhaps I should have kept my insights to myself," he said, flashing a warm smile.

A wave of recognition washed over me. It couldn't be, I thought, but the hearty laughter that followed confirmed my suspicions. Before me stood Julian Mantle, the enigmatic yogi of India, transformed beyond recognition. The pallor, the cough, and the lifelessness were replaced by a vibrant, lineless countenance radiating with health and vitality. Gone was the weary senior partner; in his place was a rejuvenated Julian, exuding an aura of inner peace and transformation.

The office, once filled with uncertainty, now brimmed with an inexplicable sense of tranquility. Julian Mantle had returned, and his presence held the promise of untold stories and profound changes.
