Chapter 1: The Wrong Turn

I should’ve known better.

It was past midnight, and the GPS had rerouted me due to an accident on the interstate. "Take Exit 47B, then continue on Highway 9 for 12 miles," the robotic voice instructed.

Highway 9 was a narrow, winding road, barely lit by the occasional flickering streetlamp. The kind of road people whisper about in small towns—the one where cell service drops without warning.

I turned up the radio to drown out the uneasy feeling creeping up my spine. The storm had started as a drizzle but quickly turned into a downpour. My headlights cut through the sheets of rain, reflecting off the slick asphalt like a funhouse mirror.

Then—BANG.

The car jolted violently. My hands clenched the wheel as I fought to keep control. The rear right tire had blown out. I barely managed to pull onto the muddy shoulder before the car stalled completely.

Great. Just perfect.

Chapter 2: No Signal, No Help

I grabbed my phone. No service.

The rain hammered against the roof like impatient fists. I weighed my options:

Stay in the car and hope someone drove by. (Unlikely—I hadn’t seen another vehicle in miles.)

Walk to find help. (In this storm? With no idea where the nearest town was?)

I sighed and reached for the door handle. Maybe I could at least assess the damage.

The moment I stepped out, icy water seeped into my shoes. The wind howled, tossing my hood back like it was mocking me. I crouched beside the blown tire—completely shredded.

That’s when I heard it.

Footsteps.

Chapter 3: The Stranger in the Rain

I spun around.

A man stood a few feet away, his face shadowed by a soaked hoodie. My pulse spiked. This is it. This is how I die.

But then he spoke.

"Need help?"

His voice was calm. Not threatening. Just… matter-of-fact.

I hesitated. "Uh… yeah. My tire blew."

He nodded and walked past me, kneeling beside the wrecked rubber like it was nothing. Up close, I could see he was in his late 30s, with rough hands and a faded tattoo peeking out from his sleeve.

"Jake," he said, not looking up.

"Alex," I replied, still wary.

He reached into his trunk—an old, beat-up pickup—and pulled out a rusted jack and a spare.

"Lucky for you, I’m a mechanic."

Chapter 4: The Kindness of a Stranger

Jake worked in silence, the rain dripping from his hood as he swapped the tire with practiced ease. I stood there, useless, arms crossed against the cold.

"You live around here?" I asked, trying to break the tension.

He paused. "Used to."

That was it. No further explanation.

Ten minutes later, he stood, wiping his hands on his jeans. "You’re good to go."

I reached for my wallet. "How much do I owe you?"

He shook his head. "Just pass it on."

Before I could respond, he was back in his truck, engine roaring to life. The taillights disappeared into the storm, leaving me standing there, soaked and stunned.

Chapter 5: The Disappearance

A month later, I was at a diner off the interstate when I saw it.

A missing person poster.

The face staring back at me was unmistakable.

Jake Morrison. Last seen: Highway 9. Five years ago.

My coffee cup slipped from my fingers.

The waitress noticed me staring. "Oh, that’s a sad one," she said. "Local mechanic. Went out one night to help a stranded driver. Never came home."

I couldn’t breathe.

"They ever find him?" I managed to ask.

She shook her head. "Nope. Just his truck, abandoned on the side of the road."

Chapter 6: The Truth?

I never told anyone. Who would believe me?

But sometimes, on stormy nights, I drive down Highway 9. Just to see.

And I always help strangers in need.

Because Jake said to pass it on.

And I will.
