Chapter 2: The Marriage of Struggles
Lan met Minh during her final year at university. Minh was a reserved yet determined man, whose life mirrored hers in many ways. He had grown up in a small fishing village, where the smell of saltwater and the sound of waves were constant companions. Like Lan, he had fought against the odds, working hard to get an education and escape the hardships of his youth. They met at a community event and bonded over shared stories of struggle, dreams of a better future, and their desire to build a stable family.
After Lan graduated, they decided to get married. Their wedding was modest but filled with joy. Held in their village, it was a simple affair: a few rented tables, bowls of homemade dishes, and the laughter of close friends and family. They moved into a small rented room in the city, sharing dreams of creating a new life together.
Life, however, wasn’t kind in the beginning. Their room was barely more than a space with a bed and a small stove. It leaked during rainstorms and trapped the heat on sweltering summer days. Lan took up a job as an office assistant, while Minh worked as a delivery driver, transporting goods around the city on his aging motorbike. Despite working tirelessly, their combined income could barely cover rent and food.
The constant financial strain tested their marriage. Minh, exhausted from long hours of physical labor, often returned home late and silent. Lan, burdened by the monotony of office work and managing the household, sometimes resented the never-ending grind. Arguments flared occasionally, driven by stress and frustration rather than genuine anger. But they always found a way to reconcile, reminding each other of the love that had brought them together.
Their life took a turning point with the birth of their son, Nam. His arrival brought them immense joy, though it also added new challenges. The cost of raising a child weighed heavily on them, but Lan and Minh found renewed motivation in their parental responsibilities. Holding Nam in her arms, Lan resolved to give her son a life free from the instability she had experienced as a child.
Minh, too, felt the weight of responsibility. Determined to improve their situation, he decided to take a bold step. Using the small savings they had managed to set aside, he bought a secondhand food cart and began selling banh mi at a busy street corner. It was a risk, but Minh was confident that with hard work, they could make it work. Lan joined him, waking up at dawn to prepare fresh ingredients. She experimented with recipes, adding her unique touch to make their sandwiches stand out.
At first, business was slow. There were days when they barely broke even, and others when they wondered if they had made the right choice. But they didn’t give up. Gradually, their efforts paid off. Word of their delicious banh mi spread, and customers began to flock to their cart.
With time, the cart turned into a small stall, and later into a modest eatery. Their income grew steadily, allowing them to move into a slightly larger apartment. Nam now had a small desk for his studies and a space to play. For the first time, they felt a semblance of security.
Despite their progress, Lan and Minh knew that their marriage required constant effort. They worked on their communication, learning to share their worries and support each other through challenges. On rare quiet evenings, after Nam was tucked into bed, they would sit together, reflecting on how far they had come.
Lan often thought back to her childhood during these moments. She felt grateful for the hardships that had shaped her resilience and determination. Though the road was still difficult, she found strength in the life they were building—a life rooted in love, perseverance, and hope.
