Stopping Time Is Not the Same as Living Longer
A clockmaker built a device able to freeze time for anyone who touched it. People used it to pause their happiest seconds. But soon they realized they were collecting stillness, not experiences. A young woman shattered the device and shouted, “Let life move!” Time resumed, rushing forward in a torrent, and those who had tried to hold onto moments watched them dissolve. The clockmaker whispered: “You cannot save what was meant to flow.”

"What happened to me?" The question hung in the air, damp and hollow as it was. I felt the closeness of the walls, solid and deep. There was no echo. No hope that a simple voice could impede the silent dark. It surrounded me, gathered up and rolled over me with a blanket of complete forgetfulness. I was gone. Dead. To all who knew me, lost years ago. This is what happens to bones. This is what happens to those buried and left to lie beneath the earth until the end of time.

Yells and entreaties and palms slapping frantically on the forcefield’s unyielding wall proved not to be the way ahead. Already the fast-filling froth was soaking both victims under their tunics, waist-high, chest-high, armpit-high. Mini-Flash Phytolith was shrieking aloud that he’d always known it would be the second gender, and at least he was going to die hating them and that much remained for him.
