The Clock Ticks

Chapter 6

By Chamuditha AppuhamyPublished about a year ago 3 min read

The ticking of the pocket watch was unnervingly loud in the silence of the forest. Each second felt like it carried a weight, pressing down on my chest. I stared at the watch, its hands moving steadily, counting down from an hour.

“Follow the clock,” the note had said. But what did that mean?

The headlights of the taxi cast long, jagged shadows on the trees, and the clearing seemed to grow darker with every passing moment. My breath fogged in the cold night air as I tried to make sense of it all.

Then, the pocket watch began to glow.

A faint, golden light emanated from its surface, growing brighter until it illuminated the clearing. The hands, which had been ticking steadily, stopped suddenly at 45 minutes.

I glanced around, unsure of what to do. That’s when I noticed something—a faint trail of golden light snaking through the forest. It shimmered like a ghostly path, leading away from the clearing.

“Follow the clock,” I whispered, gripping the watch tightly.

I took a hesitant step forward, then another, until I found myself walking down the glowing trail. The forest seemed alive, every rustling leaf and snapping twig amplifying my unease.

As I walked, the ticking of the pocket watch grew louder. At times, it sounded as though it was coming from behind me, making me glance over my shoulder nervously. But each time, there was nothing—just the endless, looming trees.

The path led to a small, dilapidated bridge spanning a shallow, murky stream. On the other side stood a signpost, its words barely legible under the faint moonlight.

“Choose wisely: left or right.”

I stared at the two paths branching out before me. The left path was dark, the trees arching over it like a tunnel, their branches clawing at the sky. The right path was eerily well-lit, as though the moonlight favored it.

The watch ticked faster now, the sound echoing in my ears. I glanced at it again. The hands were moving rapidly, the time counting down faster than it should. 30 minutes left.

“Choose wisely,” I muttered, stepping closer to the sign.

Then I noticed something strange: faint symbols carved into the wooden signpost. They were barely visible, but I could make out a pocket watch etched into the wood next to the left path.

It felt like a clue.

Taking a deep breath, I turned onto the left path. The air grew colder, and the ticking of the watch seemed to synchronize with the sound of my heartbeat. The trees whispered in the wind, their branches creaking like ancient voices.

As I moved deeper into the forest, I saw something ahead—a faint glimmer in the darkness. I quickened my pace, my instincts screaming to reach the light.

Finally, I emerged into a second clearing. At its center stood a large clocktower, impossibly out of place in the middle of the forest. The tower was ancient, its stone surface covered in moss and vines. The hands of its clock were frozen at 3:00 AM, just like the pocket watch.

Beneath the clocktower stood a figure.

It was the driver.

He leaned casually against the tower, his crooked grin illuminated by the faint glow of the pocket watch in my hand.

“Made it, kid,” he said, clapping slowly. “But the game’s not over yet.”

I glared at him, my fear giving way to frustration. “What do you want from me?”

He chuckled. “It’s not about what I want. It’s about what you’ll do to survive.”

He pointed to the pocket watch. “That little trinket of yours is the key to this whole game. You’ve got…” He glanced at his own watch. “Fifteen minutes left to figure out what to do with it. If you don’t… well, let’s just say you won’t like what happens when the time runs out.”

“What happens?” I demanded.

His smile widened. “Tick-tock, kid. Better figure it out.”

The driver vanished into the shadows, leaving me alone with the towering clock and the relentless ticking of the pocket watch.

I stared at the tower, then at the watch, trying to piece together the puzzle. Time was running out, and I had no idea what to do.
