The Carnival That Appeared in Storms

Every decade, when thunder rolled over the Appalachian hills, an entire carnival appeared in the rain. Rides spun, lights flashed, and laughter echoed through the mist.
Those who entered said the performers recognized them — called them by name, told them jokes they’d heard as children.
The Ferris wheel was said to show your happiest memory at the top. But if you looked down, you saw the year you’d die painted on the ground.
When the storm passed, the carnival vanished — leaving only wet footprints and a smell of sugar and smoke.
