The Boys' Antony Starr Shares Heartfelt Post After Wraping the Filming of Season 5

The Boys' Antony Starr reflects on his time filming the hyper-violent comic book show in a lengthy social media post. Starr has played the series' main antagonist, Homelander, since the beginning of the superhero satire. Essentially a twisted version of Superman lacking any morals, Homelander is a nearly unstoppable force. Starr will next appear as the character in the final season of The Boys.

On Starr's Instagram, he warmly looks back on his time on The Boys. Although filming wrapped in July, Starr was waiting to share his feelings so he could process the end of the show. He praises the cast and creator, Eric Kripke, while sharing his gratitude. Starr looks back on "creat[ing] a monster" and how much he will miss the "complicated character." Check out his post below:

Been waiting a little to let things settle and try and process the end of this show.

The Boys.

Difficult (for me) to put into words what an incredible ride this has been. How much life and growth has occurred. How amazing the team is. It’s truly been the highlight of my career.

When we began, I had no idea what was coming. This juggernaut left the station and never stopped. Except for that Covid moment. Oh and the strikes. That was a thing too. But apart from those two times, it never stopped, boldly making its mark on the television landscape. There’s nothing else like it. It lives in its own lane.

And at the end of the shoot, all there really is to say is- thank you. The incredible Canadian crew. The amazing production team. The insanely talented cast. The people at Amazon and Sony that took a chance on this insane thing(and made the great choice in casting me😂)and all the other people that contributed in some way, big or small, to this beautiful, complex, warped, delicious show.

I love this show. And I love this character. Truly. I will dearly miss heading to work, knowing what we were aiming for but never knowing where we would find ourselves by the end of the day…only that we would have fun and it would be creatively rewarding in the extreme.

This complicated character allowed the space and range to discover and push boundaries in a way I never expected and I will always be grateful for this experience.

And of course huge gratitude to my co-parent with this twisted gem of a character- @erickripke1 . We created a monster, sir. And I will miss him, and you. Til we roll out the last season. When I’ll see you.

But this creative chapter is closed , and I’ll miss it, brother. 🙏🏼

And finally- massive thank you to the fans. You are the life blood. Without you, we don’t get to do this. And our fans are second to none. Mad love to you….and deepest respect for your taste ;)

What This Means For The Boys

The Boys initially made a splash on Prime Video in part due to how gory and shocking it was to viewers. While that may have been what initially hooked the audience, a large part of what kept them coming back was the characters and the cast of The Boys. One of the big standout performances came from Starr as Homelander.

Starr describes his time on the show as "the highlight of my career," which is understandable. Homelander provided a character who is undeniably evil, but is also complex. While no viewer should condone his actions, his childhood being groomed and tortured makes him a tragic figure.

It is possible that Starr will be seen again in Gen V season 2. A spinoff of The Boys, Homelander previously made a cameo in the season 1 finale. Gen V season 2 also takes place before The Boys season 5, so he could make another appearance.

Our Take On Starr's Post

Starr looking back on the show is a reminder of how groundbreaking the series has been. It's an even more impressive feat given the sheer number of comic book properties being adapted for movies and TV. The show has pushed the limits of what can be done visually and with social commentary, so hopefully, it will be able to live up to expectations for its final outing.

While Starr's emotional post encapsulates his feelings about the series, it also helps set up the final season. Production may be over, but there is still an entire season left of the show to air. When the dust settles, hopefully, viewers will be looking back at The Boys as fondly as Starr.
