The Approach of Calagan

Part 2 of Tales from the Center

The trip to Calagan was somber. Though the crew survived insurmountable odds, the loss was heavy on all that survived. The Kira had taken just under half of the Dayla’s crew. Sitting in my cabin my desk covered in papers. In front of me sits a blank page with my pen laying across it. The emotion almost boiling over as I read over Kyden’s death contract. A death contract, I required every member of my crew to write one, it being their dying wish if the waters were to take them. “Cap?” A quite vocie calls.

Looking up I see Joshw my first mate slowly opening the door into my room. “Yes Joshw.” My voice almost betraying my sorrow.

“Calagan has just come into view.”

“I need to report the blockade to the Governor. Will you see that these make it out?”

“Of course cap.” He repeats the same response but the words, heavier.

“Yes Joshw.”

He stood there silent the sound of the water the only thing heard. “They be good men.” His words were reverent and somber as he tries to hold back his emotions.

I nod to him. “And because of that we will honor there last wishes.” I can tell he still wanted to say something but it was like he didn’t even know what to say. Over the years we have lost several men, but never like this. But as the use of Bluesea energy has grown, as well as the fight against them, shipping it has become more dangerous.

After he stood there not seeming to know what to say he nods. “I will prepare us to dock.” He then heads back out to the deck leaving me to my work.

I can feel the slowing of the ship as the Dayla prepares to dock. The gentle sound from the city can just be heard in the sound of the waters. The light of the sun blinding me as I exit the artificial light of the bowels of the coaster. As my eyes adjust the vision of the city of Calagan comes into view. With it’s large towers one every several miles apart, surrounding the city, and it’s largest building in the center, the Pallasseum. All the building slowly get taller as they get closer to the Pallasseum, Giving the city a shape like a cone with several tall spikes around it. The port lay between two of the surounding towers about half a mile from the city itself.

“Prepare to dock!” The voice of my first mate was heard through the Dayla. Several men running to their posts. As the dock gets closer a signal man was seen guiding our ship to it’s port, for entry and inspection.

“You are the Dayla with 20 crates of Bluesea Energy?” The Inspector asks his eyes not leaving his tablet.

“This is her.” I respond handing over a small chip about the size of a sea dollar though more angular with small green lines traveling across it’s dim silvery surface.

“Captin Rykin. Yes I see. Let’s take a look at the goods.” His eyes finally meeting mine.

“Of course Inspector, I will leave you in the capable hands of Betty, the cargo manager.” With that I step aside revealing a petite dark skined woman with short black hair, who then steps where I once stood.

“I will not be passed off.” He was insulted. Being an inspector of the great city Calagan he seemed to think he deserved better.

“Inspector, I’m not passing you off, but merely handing you to the right person for the job. Nothing goes in or out of this ship without her knowledge. If I were to help you, you would then need to go over it again with her.” He still looked annoyed but followed Betty without further protest.

“Cap” a familiar voice calls as I take my first step on to the dock. Looking back I see Joshw running over to me.

“Aw Joshw, Is she all locked in.”

“Of course she is, I’d never leave if she wasn’t.”

I nod and hand him a large stack of envelopes. “Jessen, Calvin, and Layla’s families all live here, so please deliver their’s personally.”

With his right hand he gives me a salute, reaching out to grab the envelopes with his left. “I won’t let them down, Cap.”

“I know you won’t. Now, I have business at the Pallasseum.” With that I turn to look at the city, with the towering structure at its center.
