The Long Wait for The Boys Season 5: What Comes Next?

‘The Boys’ Season 5

If you were hoping to watch the series finale of The Boys any time soon, get ready to cool your jets. Amazon has just confirmed that season 5 has officially wrapped filming. That sounds like progress, right? Technically, yes. But if you’ve been paying attention to the show’s production rhythm, you already know what’s coming next: a long, drawn-out post-production cycle that’ll leave fans waiting deep into next year—and then some.

Let’s talk numbers. Season 4 finished filming on April 12, 2024. Fans didn’t get to watch it until June 13, 2025. That’s a 14-month gap between wrap and release. And if Amazon sticks to that timeline, season 5, which wrapped in July 2025, won’t land until September 2026. That’s a full two years and three months between seasons.

For a modern streaming series, even one as effects-heavy as The Boys, that’s pushing it. Long seasonal gaps are nothing new anymore, but this one is starting to test even the most loyal viewers. Two-plus years between installments feels more like Stranger Things territory—or The Winds of Winter level limbo. And yes, The Boys season 5 is set to be the final chapter of the main series, so the long wait only adds more pressure to stick the landing.

So what are fans supposed to do in the meantime?

The most immediate stopgap will be the second season of Gen V, the college-set spinoff that actually holds its own—some would argue even outperforms The Boys on a few fronts. Gen V season 2 is scheduled to arrive in September 2025, conveniently filling the void exactly one year before the mother series returns for its swan song.

But Gen V isn’t the only piece of this expanding universe. Two more spin-offs are still in development: the prequel series Vought Rising, which is expected to dive into the corporation's shady origins, and The Boys: Mexico, which aims to expand the franchise's scope geographically and culturally. Neither has a release date, and both likely won’t air until after season 5 concludes, meaning 2027 and beyond.

If that pattern sounds familiar, it’s because Amazon is now playing from the same handbook Netflix has been using for years—milking every ounce of IP longevity through offshoots and prequels. Just look at Reacher, which is plugging its seasonal gap with a spin-off centered on fan-favorite character Neagley. Or The Terminal List, which is delaying its second season in favor of a prequel miniseries starring Taylor Kitsch, set to arrive this August.

It’s the new norm in streaming: space out the mainline series as long as possible, then fill the dead air with connected spin-offs, origin stories, and character-deep dives. Whether that’s smart business or just franchise fatigue waiting to happen depends on the execution.

Still, let’s not pretend this is an ideal scenario for fans. The truth is, most people were hoping to watch The Boys series finale a lot sooner than late 2026. And that’s just the release date. Factor in Amazon’s weekly release model—which they’ve shown no signs of changing—and we’re probably looking at November 2026 by the time the final credits roll. That’s 28 months from now. Ouch.

Of course, if season 5 sticks the landing, maybe it’ll be worth the wait. The cast and creators certainly have time to polish every frame, edit, and explosion. But in the age of short attention spans and dozens of new shows vying for eyeballs every week, disappearing for over two years is risky.

Let’s just hope this finale delivers something explosive enough to justify the delay—because if there’s one thing The Boys has never lacked, it’s spectacle. Still, no matter how you spin it, a 14-month post-production followed by a slow-drip release feels like a patience test even Homelander would struggle with.
