Persephone Speaks

Subverting mythology is what I’m here for.

People have a lot of different names for me: Persephone, Kore, Eve, just to name a few. Oh, did you think we were different? Should I have fed your Adam a pomegranate instead of an apple? Would that have made it more clear that there’s really only one story, exile from the garden? And it’s been mistold, time out of mind. Why? Because somewhere along the way, we allowed the foolish men to become the scribes and tell the stories.

Presumably, we were too busy tending the children to notice what they were doing, until it was too late and the roles were cast, the foolish men indicting us to cast themselves in a better light. If we’re so much more persuasive than they are, why don’t they get out of the way and let us do the work that needs to be done? Because they are afraid of us: they fear our courage, our knowledge, and our voices which all have the power to bring their impotent fragility to light.

Hades never abducted me, and I was not created from Adam’s rib. I am Spring itself, and I reign in the underworld. I am not his subject—I am his queen, and I am the goddess who brings your spring fever as well as the goddess who decides your fate, unless I find you boring. In that case, I defer to my husband.

If the mortals were especially foolish during their lives, I send my brother Hermes to fetch our cousin Circe to me, and we have such wicked fun, my cousin and I. She brings her potions and powders down to my fire, she with power to make men (and women) appear as they truly are. She is powerless among children, who are protected by their innocence, but woe be unto the mortals who try to shirk their duty by clinging to that innocence past the age of reason. Intellectual and moral irresponsibility are the greatest detriment to mortal life, and I am ruthless when they stand before me.

Okay, now I see it. Not the stolen girl, but the queen. A story no one dares to tell.. That’s fierce, and honestly? You owning it. Feels like the myths are rewrite themselves.

I remember saying I was going to floss and brush my teeth to come back and read this. So sorry that, this didn't happen. Sleep overtook me. I loved this. Absolutely love the tone this was written in. It felt like a secret only few of us know. The twist. The foolish men. Us. We are the better bunch. Not the men. They did not take care of business. Instead they made themselves look good. While we were busy taking care of the kids. Our reputation trashed. How dare they. This was absolutely captivating. The word impotent. Gave me a boost for my day. She defers to her husband unless she finds us boring. Yaaas queen 👑 🙌🏾 Totally agree with this line. 'intellectual and moral irresponsibility are the greatest detrimental to mortal life. This was outstanding Harper 🤗❤️🙏🏾🖤
