The tower’s alarm bells rang, not with sound, but with memory itself. Around Lyn and Du Hao, the air shimmered — scenes from vanished worlds flickered like candlelight: a ruined palace overgrown with salt-crystals, a version of the Clocktower hanging upside-down in a sky of obsidian, a battlefield strewn with clocks instead of corpses.

Each was a future that never came to pass — yet now clawed its way into reality.

Du Hao raced down the spiral ramp leading to the Tower’s core systems. “The anomaly is surfacing too fast. If it stabilizes here, the entire timeline could splinter beyond recovery.”

Lyn followed close behind, her eyes narrowed, mind racing. “It wasn’t Calren. Not really. This thing was hiding in the seams of time all along.”

They reached the Vault of Threads, a chamber sealed since the tower’s founding — used only in emergencies when the timelines themselves rebelled. Du Hao smashed the chrono-lock open, exposing a cascade of glowing threads, each one humming with historical energy.

One was pulsing darkly.

“That’s it,” he said, pointing. “It’s threading itself into our reality, disguising as a forgotten probability.”

Lyn studied it — a twisted strand, black with flickers of gold, looping endlessly through forgotten moments. “This isn’t just a timeline,” she said softly. “It’s a consciousness. It’s choosing what to remember.”

As they watched, the thread began to replicate — sending whispers into other strands. Memories warped. People long dead were remembered differently. Cities took names they were never given. Some places disappeared entirely from the tower’s memory archives.

The world was beginning to forget itself.

“We need to isolate it,” Du Hao said. “Before it rewrites the whole weave.”

But Lyn hesitated. “What if isolating it makes it stronger? What if the only way to face it… is to remember it? All of it.”

Du Hao stared at her. “You want to expose the Tower to the full memory of a collapsed reality? That could corrupt everything!”

“And if we don’t, we’ll lose everything anyway. At least if we remember it, we understand what we’re fighting.”

He didn’t answer. Somewhere deep inside, he remembered something too — a different version of himself, one that never stopped the war… one that let Lyn die.

The anomaly had touched even him.

“I’ll do it,” Lyn said, stepping forward toward the central loom. “Activate the Core Mirror. Let me see what it sees.”

Du Hao grabbed her arm. “It could burn your mind.”

Lyn looked at him, steady. “We built this tower to protect time. But maybe the only way to protect it… is to face everything we’ve tried to forget.”

A long silence passed between them.

Then Du Hao nodded.

And together, they unlocked the Mirror.

The Vault flooded with light — not white, but prismatic, impossible to describe. Lyn stepped in, and as the memories hit her, she did not scream.

She remembered the world before it was broken.

And she saw the face of the anomaly.

A child.

A prisoner.

A memory too painful for anyone to carry… so it was cast out.

But memory never forgets.

And now it wanted its story told.
