Summer's End; Letter From Clara ~ part XV ~

As ya'll know, the absolute highlight of my summer was sleeping over at my best friend forever's house; meeting Clara changed a lot in me and today I got my first letter from her.

Dear May, I don't know the date, but it's Sunday and I just got back from church, ANYHOOOOO! I miss you something awful; life's been boring, dreadful hot and I might feel a bit lonely. I am so busy caring for the house, Smacky Lips and my own self I have lost my mind and am looking forward to school starting next week.

You left a sock here and it smells something nasty, haha! Just joking. I imagine your freckled face all red and hope we can find a way to sneak and meet. What do you think about the train tracks down toward the bridge that goes over the river? You'd have to walk half way, so it's about 30 minutes for both of us. I can bring jelly sandwiches if you can bring us water cause God knows we'll be thirsty. Now, eat this note or rip it up in tiny pieces and bury it (you shouldn't play with matches and burn it cause I know how prone to accidents you are). Thursday when Aunt Pearl cleans your house is best as Jolly and Bertie's Momma is taking Smacky Lips to the doctor to have her toenails cut. That's got to be the dumbest reason to go to the doctor if I ever heard one. I am grateful though as that's the last job I'd want added to my list of chores, clipping her knotty toed nails that is. She's sleeping more, drooling more than eating by the way.

I'm gonna hope you show up since between now and then there won't be time for you to send me an answer. Remember, it's way scarier for me cause I am crossing into Yonderville, even if only by a half a mile and I don't want no ole white people yelling at me or worse one of your weirdo hobo friends sauntering up with brown bag smelly breath!

I'm gonna leave while it's cool out, like 7 in the morning, just after Aunt Pearl gets her taxi cab, (thanks to your Paw-Paw) she doesn't have to walk a thousand miles to clean up your mess. Those chili pepper pancakes just shows how much you gotta learn to read! Tell your Paw-Paw to buy you cornflakes and a bag of sugar, that's way much safer than him around the stove much less you.

Bye for now Missy! Your blood-sister, Clara

I thought about what Clara wrote, the risks of getting caught and my heart skipped a few beats, but truth is, to meet my best friend I'd probably do just about anything.

I love the expressions 'dreadful hot,' and 'knotty toed nails!' This is a wonderful series. I know that it has to end at some point, but I hope not for a long time!

This was an eagerly awaited read-- waiting was well worth the time it took to write. I love the playful friendship and suspence and realism from the mouths of babes that you capture. bravo on yet another pivotal chapter.

This is so beautiful! I want my grand daughter to read it, so she can understand the way things used to be.
