According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there has been an 80% increase in the number of new COVID-19 cases reported worldwide in the past month.

This surge comes just days after the identification of a new variant, Omicron's sub-variantAG.5.

In weekly update, the United Nations agencies revealed that nearly 1.5 million new cases were reported from July 10th to August 6th, marking an 80% increase compared to the previous 28 days.

However, the number of deaths decreased by 57% to 2500. The Western Pacific region has seen a significant rise in infections, with a 137% increase reported.

Many countries in the northern hemisphere, including the US, UK, France, and Japan, have also witnessed a recent increase in cases.

Experts suggest that factors such as waning immunity and the emergence of new sub-variants may have contributed to this uptick.

Despite the WHO declaring in May that COVID-19 is no longer a global health emergency, they have cautioned that the virus will continue to circulate and mutate, leading to occasional spikes in infections, hospitalizations, and deaths.
