Matthew Chapter 6

Summary of this chapter.

By Danny Prem kumarPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Matthew Chapter 6 is a significant part of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus imparts teachings on righteousness, prayer, and reliance on God. This chapter elaborates on how followers should live out their faith with sincerity and devotion. Here’s a summary of its key points:

### 1. **Righteousness and Hypocrisy (Verses 1-4)**

Jesus begins by warning against practicing righteousness in a way that seeks public approval. He criticizes those who perform acts of charity or good deeds to be seen and praised by others, as this behavior negates the true reward from God. Instead, he advocates for secret generosity, where the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. This principle emphasizes the importance of genuine, unobtrusive acts of kindness, which are rewarded by God.

### 2. **The Lord’s Prayer (Verses 5-15)**

In this section, Jesus provides a model for prayer, known as the Lord’s Prayer. He instructs that prayer should be sincere and not done for show. Jesus criticizes the use of empty, repetitive phrases and encourages a personal, heartfelt connection with God. The Lord’s Prayer includes several key elements:

- **Addressing God**: "Our Father in heaven," acknowledging God's holiness and authority.

- **Requesting Daily Needs**: "Give us today our daily bread," expressing dependence on God for daily provision.

- **Forgiveness**: "Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors," emphasizing the necessity of forgiving others as God forgives us.

- **Guidance and Deliverance**: "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one," seeking God’s guidance and protection.

Jesus also stresses that forgiveness from God is conditional upon our willingness to forgive others.

### 3. **Fasting (Verses 16-18)**

Jesus addresses the practice of fasting, advising that it should be done privately rather than to attract attention. He criticizes those who fast with a gloomy appearance to gain respect from people. Instead, Jesus encourages fasting to be done discreetly, with a clean appearance, as an act of devotion to God. This inward sincerity will be rewarded by God.

### 4. **Treasures in Heaven (Verses 19-24)**

Jesus teaches about the importance of focusing on spiritual rather than material wealth. He contrasts earthly treasures, which are temporary and susceptible to decay or theft, with heavenly treasures, which are eternal. He emphasizes that one’s heart follows where their treasure is, suggesting that a focus on material wealth can lead to spiritual distraction. Jesus also notes that one cannot serve both God and money, illustrating the impossibility of divided loyalty.

### 5. **Do Not Worry (Verses 25-34)**

In this concluding section, Jesus addresses anxiety and the worry over material needs. He encourages trust in God’s provision, using examples from nature. He points out that God provides for the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, and therefore, believers should trust that God will also provide for them. Jesus advises against worrying about the future, emphasizing that each day has its own challenges and focusing on the present is more productive. Instead, he encourages seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness first, with the assurance that all other needs will be met.

### **Summary**

Matthew Chapter 6 provides foundational teachings on living a life that reflects true piety and dependence on God. Jesus emphasizes the importance of sincerity in acts of righteousness, private prayer, and fasting. He instructs his followers to focus on eternal values rather than material possessions and to trust in God’s provision rather than succumbing to anxiety about daily needs. The chapter highlights a life that prioritizes spiritual values and reliance on God, demonstrating how faith should manifest in practical, everyday actions.
