Lyra the Princess II

Chapter Two

By Karan w. Published about a year ago 8 min read

That evening, like every day, Lyra stood behind the old banyan tree, smiling as she watched the birds finish the food in her lunchbox. Suddenly, she noticed a rabbit lying motionless on the ground. As she approached it, the rabbit twitched slightly out of fear and tried to run, but it was seriously injured. Its body was soaked in blood, and its wounds revealed its bones. The rabbit’s white fur was stained red.

As soon as Lyra saw the rabbit, she froze. Without wasting a moment, she picked it up in her arms and ran home as fast as she could. Her school bag and lunchbox hung forgotten on the tree. At that moment, she didn’t care about anything else.

When her father saw her running home, he was surprised. Lyra’s dress was soaked in blood, and her eyes were filled with fear. Panting heavily, she said, “The rabbit is badly injured. We have to save it, Dad! We must save it!” Her entire being seemed devoted to saving that small rabbit.

Her father quickly cleaned the rabbit’s wounds, applied medicine, and bandaged them. Its condition was critical, and survival seemed unlikely. He laid the rabbit on a warm bed, but it remained unconscious.

Lyra stayed by its side, hoping it would open its eyes. She prayed fervently for the rabbit’s recovery. After hours of waiting, the rabbit stirred slightly in pain and opened its eyes. Overjoyed, Lyra ran to her father and exclaimed, “We saved it, Dad! It’s awake!” Seeing her so happy, her father smiled and said, “You did a wonderful thing, my princess.” Lyra smiled faintly and left to finish her homework, leaving some fresh leaves and fruit for the rabbit.

Time passed, and the rabbit fully recovered. Lyra named it “Snowy.” It became a part of her daily routine, providing her with company and joy. At school, Miss Rose’s arrival brought new excitement to Lyra’s life. She started enjoying her days and became one of Miss Rose’s favorite students.

One day, during lunch, Miss Rose entered the classroom and said, “I forgot to bring my lunch today. Would anyone like to share their lunchbox with me?”

The other students, engrossed in their conversations, didn’t pay attention. Lyra hesitated for a moment, thinking about her untouched lunchbox. Gathering her courage, she said, “Miss, we can share my lunchbox if you’d like…”

Miss Rose smiled warmly and said, “Thank you so much, dear. Shall we eat in the park? I love doing that.”

Lyra agreed, and they sat in the park, sharing her lunch. As they ate, Miss Rose commented, “Your mother is a wonderful cook. This tastes amazing! I’d love to meet her someday.”

Lyra remained quiet for a moment, looking up at the sky. Then, softly, she said, “I don’t have a mother. She passed away two years ago due to cancer.” Tears welled up in her eyes and began to fall silently.

Miss Rose looked at her with a pained smile. “Oh, dear, I’m so sorry to hear about your loss.” Her eyes filled with tears, and her smile faded. “I also had a daughter, just like you,” she said. “But she passed away last month on her birthday. Whenever I see you, I’m reminded of her.”

She handed Lyra a photo and said, “This is the last picture I have of her.”

Lyra looked at the photo for a long time. “Your daughter was beautiful, Miss. I’m sorry you lost her so soon,” she said. As she handed the photo back, Miss Rose said, “You can keep it if you’d like.”

Lyra put the photo in her coat pocket and returned to her seat. Looking out the window, she saw Miss Rose still sitting there, lost in thought.

Today she was going home thinking about the things Miss Rose had said. Probably, her and Miss Rose's sorrows were the same. Hidden in the depths of the past. But whenever they came out, they brought a flood of tears with them. Even today she was looking at that picture, sitting on a branch of the same banyan tree in the forest on the way. If this girl was alive, then perhaps we both would have been friends. She thought. One by one, the parrots came and sat on her shoulder, then another, another, and in this way, a lot of birds gathered around her. Seeing this scene, Lyra started laughing, and the echo of her laughter started floating in the sky. Probably, all the birds were in search of food today as usual. "I'm sorry friends, I have nothing for you today." She said smiling.

Just then she saw Snowy running towards her. Snowy "as she had named that rabbit." Every day when she is returning home from school, it comes running in front of her. Then she picks it up in her arms and carries it home. These are some of the relaxing moments of her day.

She took Snowy in her arms and smilingly walked towards her home. Lyra had developed a very deep emotional bond with that rabbit. It had become a part of her daily routine, whenever she ate, she would make the rabbit sit near her and feed it. She would play with it and have fun, “which did not let it feel lonely even a little bit.

Time passed like this, Lyra was going through the biggest changes of her life. Which were probably positive changes, “ slowly all the burden was being lifted from her heart. Every day brought a new story, new hope, and energy for her.

Similarly, today was also very special for her. “Today was her birthday. So she invited Miss Rose and her entire class to a small party at her house that evening. But Lyra did not have the slightest hope that anyone from her class would come to her house on her invitation. But Miss Rose, she had every hope that Miss Rose would come.

Today when she was going home from school, “she started shivering due to cold,” because last night there was heavy rain with icy winds. As soon as she reached home, she saw that her father had decorated the house a little bit, “he had done all the preparations. Now it was getting dark, “but no guest had come to her house yet.

She stood at the door and kept looking at the path, “but no one was coming from that way.” As the darkness started to spread, darkness spread in her heart too. “Now she could see some hope of someone coming.” This ruthless and cruel neglect broke Lyra's heart, and she became very sad. All she had left now was her father and her friend Snowy, “who was with her on her birthday. But Snowy was nowhere to be seen today.

Where is Snowy? Dad! Have you seen Snowy?” she asked anxiously.

Her father’s face turned pale, “He looked sad, Lyra didn’t understand anything.

“He was probably out of the house in the freezing rain last night. “That’s why he got sick,” I’m sorry my princess, “we lost him.”

She smiled hearing such words from her father, “and ran to her bedroom,” she tried to find him by rummaging through the pillows and the bed. She looked for him in every corner of the house, but Snowy was nowhere to be found. She ran to the garden, “but he was nowhere to be found there either.”

She came back to her father, “she looked into his eyes. But she didn’t say anything. “You will never find him now. He is gone, forever. “He said seriously. “Lyra was not ready to bear this shock. “She clung to her father's neck, “She had lost the courage to cry. Only tears were dripping from her eyes.

The river of sorrow started flowing again in her life. “The cake and sweets and the gifts that her father had kept decorated on the table for her, “remained as they were.” No one touched them. This day was going to end as one of the worst nightmares of her life. She went and lay on the bed sobbing, “Even after remembering all the good memories of her life, she could not sleep peacefully. Probably, the heaviness of sorrow was too much.

Two days later, her father said to her, "Dear princess, we must leave this town. So, please help me pack our things. We need to leave here tomorrow."

After finishing all the tasks assigned to her, Lyra went for one last walk in the forest. "She even took some pieces of bread with her." She placed the bread on the branch of the banyan tree. However, today, the birds did not even touch the food she had placed. It was as if they sensed all the emotions from her sad and wilted face. All the birds began to circle around her, "as if they were trying to bid her farewell for the last time." Lyra, with a sorrowful heart, looked at that place "where she had found so much, only to lose it again." The most exciting chapter of her life had ended before it even began.

She walked around there for a long time, "then she gazed at the place one final time as if she wanted to carry those scenes as beautiful memories with her." She smiled at the birds and said, "Goodbye, my friends, you will always remain in my heart." Goodbye. With heavy steps, she walked back home, carrying the memory of that place in her heart.

After that day, Lyra never returned to that school. A few days later, Miss Rose received a letter, which she read aloud to the entire class.

Hello, Dear Miss Rose and all my dear friends. I hope you are all happy and healthy. I am grateful to all of you for the precious time I spent with you at this wonderful school. "I am happy to inform you all that the court has respectfully acquitted my father of all charges of Mr. Dewis' murder. Thank you all very much. Perhaps I will not find friends like you or a teacher like Miss Rose at my new school. I will always remember every moment I spent here. Thank you.

Miss Rose looked around the class, and the silence in every corner of the room was palpable. Everyone was silent, each feeling regret. Along with that letter, there was another letter, one addressed only to Miss Rose."

She moved to the corner of the classroom where Lyra used to sit. Even today, that spot was as messy and filled with dirt as ever. Miss Rose cleaned that area herself. After wiping down the bench, she sat there quietly.

She opened the letter and began to read.

Dear Miss Rose, thank you so much for giving me so much respect and importance. I am grateful to God for having such a teacher like you in my life. You are the treasure of my memories. The picture of your daughter is still safe with me. "If life continues after death, I would surely like to meet her." And yes, you are invited to my next birthday; this time you must come, Miss. I will be waiting for you.

Miss Rose carefully put the letter back in her coat pocket and blinked away the tears that came every time she thought of Lyra sitting alone in that sunny spot in the classroom. Looking out the window with a sense of Unemotionally, she whispered,

Sure, Lyra the Princess.

I really liked this story for the compassion it showed between a student and a teacher. I think it also teaches empathy towards humans and animals. Good job.
