No Abnormal Rise in Respiratory Problems in India Amid Worry About China’s HMPV Outbreak

As the world looks with concern at the increase in respiratory disease cases in China, India has given assurance to its people that there has not been any abnormal rise in such cases in the country. Reports put out suggest that human metapneumovirus HMPV is behind the rise in hospitalization in that country and that is something reminiscent of the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Indian health officials have maintained that the country is capable of dealing with such events if they were to arise.

India’s Comprehensive Surveillance System and Evaluation

The Union Health Ministry had recently called for a Joint Monitoring Group meeting which had WHO, NCDC and ICMR representatives in it. The group discussed the development and in their assessment, came to the conclusion that India has not experienced any anomalous spike in respiratory infections.

It was also stressed in the meeting that china’s rise of respiratory infections is part of the seasonal pattern of respiratory diseases increase which occurs all over the world during this time of the year. The usual culprits such as the influenza virus and respiratory syncytial virus, as well as human metapneumovirus HMPV, are now circulating globally including India.

The viruses presented here are usually considered to cause mild to moderate upper and lower respiratory infections, but they may be severe in the case of certain groups including young children, the elderly, and people with comorbidities.

India is doing well in its Influenza Like Illness and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness surveillance systems which are performing admirably in detecting and monitoring any aberrant trends to these illnesses almost instantaneously. Data from these systems assure that there is nothing to be concerned about.

Actions taken by India

For example, ICMR has decided to step up laboratory testing of the HMPV viruses across the country for better preparedness. This will be done to keep a track of the infection patterns and act when necessary. Furthermore, the Health Ministry has pointed out that the data collected from the recent exercises held at a country level goes to reinforce the fact that India has the capability to respond to outbreaks of respiratory illnesses.

In addition, Indian authorities are actively keeping an eye on the situation in China and are in touch with the WHO regarding the progress. The advice to ordinary people has been not to panic but, as always, to take general precautions against respiratory diseases such as sufficient hygiene and medical help in case of persisting symptoms.

HMPV- What is that?

HMPV is a novel virus that is notorious for respiratory illnesses that was first discovered in the year 2001. It is part of a family of viruses, which also includes RSV, termed Pneumoviridae family.

HMPV tends to manifest through mild cold symptoms, so as such, the primary indicators would be a runny nose, headache, aching muscles, fatigue, a dry throat and a fever. Generally speaking, the virus is not fatal, however, children, older adults and individuals with health issues are highly susceptible to catching the virus and developing further complications such as bronchiolitis, pneumonia etc. Currently, there is no vaccine for the HMPV and the normal course of treatments would be to rest or take over the counter medications. A primary focus of HMPV does include staying hydrated.

In China, the first signs of Covid infection were usua breakbos, which were empty hospitals. It has been said that during the transition of Covid into China, there was a surge in respiratory infections. This time around, people are highly skeptical and concerned as it feels familiar to the transitionary period of Covid into China however, Chinese authorities have said that the surge was a result of seasonal change and have issued no major alerts such as there is no significant change to the public health standards.

The Crimea War has been described as infamous, and has raised a variety of questions, both in the medical sector and in the field of international politics. For the medical sector, it dictated the relevance of international polycentricism not only for medicine, but also for politics. For the field of international relations, there arose a great number of frameworks for addressing changes not only on a global scale, but also on a national scale. Now there is the ongoing challenge of addressing Covid as well as reporting Polios spread in Nepal, India and Pakistan, frequently reminding us that several changes occurred in quite a very short period of time. Therefore, the WHO requested China to share full data about the outbreak whilst also stressing ulititely the significance of unified action of countries to cooperate on respiratory diseases.

The Indian Health Ministry has expressed that it will ensure everyone’s safety, and has taken all the necessary steps to guarantee that for instance it will no longer be accepting updates and changes from the WHO.

The officials in charge have confirmed that the recent data with respect to respiratory diseases is nothing to worry about as it is normal for the flu season and there has been no outbreak.

Furthermore, the government’s campaign remains focused on prevention and educating the population. The people are advised to adhere to set health guidelines, for example, frequent washing of hands, putting on a mask in populated areas, and keeping a distance from those exhibiting signs of illness.

Conclusion

In light of growing concerns on HMPV in China, India’s health system and pre-emptive action provides a sense of calm. Apart from that, ensuring close surveillance as well as ramping up testing, and communications with potential agencies are key to addressing the respiratory infection crisis. People are advised to be careful, however there is no need to panic as the health system has put in adequate measures to deal with the increasing number of infections.
