In Loving Memory
Prologue – No More Teddies, Only Darker Secrets

Vanessa yanked the teddy from little Tee’s hands and marched straight to her mother.
Leaning close, she whispered, “My new sister is always getting new teddies from Dad. I don’t like it.” Without waiting for a response, she stormed off.
Her mother searched the house for Tee — upstairs, downstairs, the closet she loved hiding in, even the kitchen cabinets—but there was no sign of her.
Finally, she opened Vanessa’s room.
And froze.
On the floor sat Tee, clutching the teddy tight. In her small hands was a kitchen knife. She was slicing the seams open.
“Tee!” her mother gasped. “Why are you doing that? I’ll get you a new one. You don’t have to ruin your sister’s.”
Tee’s eyes burned sharply, her voice trembling.
“It was mine. Dad gave it to me because she had already taken the other one. No more teddies. No more teddies.”
She dropped the ruined toy, tears spilling, and bolted from the room.
When her mother told her father, he only shrugged.
“Tee’s just a child,” he said.
As if Vanessa wasn’t.
Later that night…
“Hey, Tee.”
She looked up and gave a faint smile. “Better than I was this morning. Vanessa ruined it, but it’s fine now. No teddies, right?”
He brushed her hair back. “No, darling. No more teddies. I got you something different.”
He pressed a small box into her hands.
She kissed his cheek. “Did my papa speak to you through your dreams or something?”
He hugged her tightly, then left.
Tee opened the box slowly.
Her eyes sparkled, but not with happiness; rather, they reflected a deeper, more haunting darkness.
