Inside the car, Alenor sat next to her mother, who was dressed in her usual elegant office suit, while Alenor wore a hoodie and flared jeans. Her mother looked her up and down and addressed her with a tone of concern.
“Alenor.”
She turned to look at her mother. “Mother.”
Ms. Williams spoke with an assertive cadence “I will be hosting the Meyers brand annual gala next month at the Hôtel Beaumont. We are going to get you fitted for your outfit.”
“Can’t Alex go in my stead?” she asked, hoping for a break. I don’t mind these things, but I hate pretending to like them. Smile here, say the right things there…and sure, I can do it, but it’s exhausting.
“Your brother will be there.” Mrs. Williams stated flatly.
“Stepbrother.” Alenor firmly corrected. “Am I required to be there?” she questioned, even though she already knew the answer; her mother wouldn’t have mentioned the event otherwise. Despite their lack of communication, Alenor and her mom had a fairly good relationship since she didn’t mind her mother’s many demands and often complied with most of them.
“Be on time.” Mrs. Williams replied sharply, leaving no room for excuses.
“Yes, Mother,” Alenor responded, her tone steady but quieter than before.
Alenor then turned all her attention to her phone while Mrs. Williams began answering her numerous business calls, which she answered without missing a beat, her voice sharp, and commanding.
A few minutes later a voice could be heard from the front of the car. “We are almost at your destination, Madam Williams,” the chauffeur said from the front.
Alenor straightened, sliding her hoodie sleeves down. “May I ask the reason for my required attendance in this year's gala?” Alenor inquired while still looking outside.
“It will be to announce you as the heir to the company. Next year, you will be attending college in France with Eric. After you complete your studies, you can return to take office at this branch of the company. For your sake, I’ll remind you to get along with the boy.”
