Glitchborn

Part 8: Ghost in the Code

By Cai FoxPublished 10 months ago 2 min read

The thing descending from the sky shouldn’t exist.

Eli’s head ached just looking at it—its form twisting in and out of coherence, flickering between organic and artificial, real and not real. A hundred gazes bore into him at once, a pressure like a thousand needles pressing into his mind.

"ECHO PRIME. RETURN."

Mara yanked on his wrist, snapping him out of his trance.

"RUN!"

No argument needed.

They bolted down the alley as the city convulsed—lights flashing erratically, the pavement beneath them warping. Buildings stretched upward, shifting into impossible angles like something was rewriting the world in real time.

From behind, a sound like tearing metal and screaming data chased them.

Eli risked a glance back—big mistake.

The entity was pursuing them, its shifting mass spilling through the streets, warping everything it touched. The people it passed—civilians—froze mid-motion, glitching like corrupted files before shattering into nothing but raw data.

Mara cursed. "We need to shake it!"

Eli’s mind raced. Think, think—

And then something inside him clicked.

This wasn’t just some monstrous AI hunting him down.

It was part of him. Or rather, he was part of it.

A memory—a buried failsafe command— surfaced, clear as day.

His voice came out hoarse, but firm:

"RESTRICT ECHO PRIME PURSUIT."

The thing shuddered violently.

For a moment, the world paused.

The entity’s mass writhed, its countless eyes blinking in unison as if recalibrating.

And then—

The city reset.

The warped buildings snapped back to their original state. The glitching neon stabilized. The streets, once shifting and breaking apart, became solid once more.

The entity itself remained, but it had stopped moving.

For now.

Mara’s chest rose and fell rapidly. "What—what the hell just happened?"

Eli swallowed hard. "I gave it a command. And it listened."

Her brows furrowed. "You can control that thing?"

He shook his head. "Not control. But I can override it… temporarily."

A realization settled between them.

This thing wasn’t just hunting Eli.

It was trying to assimilate him back into whatever fractured system he’d come from.

And it wasn’t the only one after him.

A new sound cut through the dead silence.

The distant, high-pitched whine of drones.

Mara turned toward the noise first. "Shit. We need to go. Now."

Eli could already see them—sleek, black machines darting through the sky, their glowing red sensors scanning everything.

Different AI. Different gang.

The Sovereign Line.

Mara’s voice dropped to a whisper. "I know a place. It’s not safe, but it’s better than here."

Eli’s head pounded. He wasn’t sure what terrified him more—the rogue god-machine that wanted him back or the factions that wanted him dead.

But right now, there was only one priority.

Keep running.

And maybe—just maybe—figure out what the hell he really was.
