Forgotten Realm
Episode 4: Shadows in the Mist

The Duskwraiths swirled like a storm of darkness, their howls piercing the thick forest air. Lyra stood with her heart pounding, the lingering hum of the magic she'd unleashed still pulsing in her veins.
"Don't hesitate," Kieran called, his voice sharp over the chaos. He moved with deadly precision, his sword cutting through the spectral forms of the wraiths. "Your power is their weakness."Lyra clenched her fists, willing the wild energy within her to rise again. But the light didn't come as easily this time. Her fear tightened its grip, choking the power she desperately needed. One of the Duskwraiths broke away from the fray, its hollow eyes fixed on her. It moved like a shadow come to life, silent and predatory. Lyra stumbled backward, her hand grasping the dagger at her side.
"Focus, Lyra!" Kieran's shout snapped her from her paralysis. She raised her dagger, but before the creature could reach her, a sudden surge of heat burned through her hand. The blade in her grip began to glow with a fiery light, and as she slashed out instinctively, the wraith dissolved into a wisp of smoke, shrieking as it vanished.
She stared at the blade, its glowing edge flickering like embers."It's connected to you," Kieran said, rushing to her side as the remaining Duskwraiths circled. "Your magic flows through everything you touch. Use it."
Bolstered by his words, Lyra adjusted her grip on the dagger and stepped forward, determination replacing her fear. She slashed again, the glowing blade cutting through another wraith, its misty form evaporating into the night.
The creatures hissed and recoiled, their movements growing frantic. Lyra could feel the balance of the battle tipping. But even as the Duskwraiths began to fade, a new presence emerged—a shadow deeper than the others, carrying with it an aura of dread.
From the darkness, a figure stepped forward. His eyes burned like embers in a dying fire, and his voice was a low rumble that seemed to reverberate through the earth.
"Impressive, Keeper," the figure said, his gaze fixed on Lyra. "But raw power alone will not save you."
"Malgorath," Kieran growled, stepping protectively in front of Lyra.
The sorcerer tilted his head, a faint smirk playing on his lips. "You've barely scratched the surface of what the Heartstone can do. Do you truly believe you can stand against me?"
Lyra's breath caught in her throat. The weight of Malgorath's presence was suffocating, his power pressing down on her like an invisible force.
Kieran tightened his grip on his sword. "Run, Lyra," he whispered. "You're not ready for this.""No," she said, her voice trembling but resolute. She stepped forward, her dagger still glowing with the magic she'd awakened. "I won't run. Not anymore."
Malgorath's smirk deepened. "Bold. But foolish." With a flick of his hand, the ground beneath them cracked and surged, black tendrils of shadow snaking toward Lyra. Her instincts took over. She raised her hand, and a barrier of light erupted around her and Kieran, the tendrils recoiling as if burned. The effort drained her, leaving her knees weak, but she stood her ground.
"You are learning," Malgorath said, his voice laced with mockery. "But the light will falter. And when it does, I will be there to claim what is mine."
With that, he faded into the shadows, his presence lingering like a toxic fog.
Kieran placed a steadying hand on her shoulder. "You did well, Lyra. But this is far from over."She nodded, her breath ragged, her body trembling with exhaustion. The encounter had shaken her, but it had also ignited a fire within her—a resolve to fight, to master the power of the Heartstone, and to face whatever darkness lay ahead.
As the forest fell silent once more, she looked to Kieran. "Teach me. Whatever it takes, I'll be ready."To be continued...
