Dreams in the Darkened Night

In the Dark, Dreams Come Alive

By Nauman KhanPublished 9 months ago 5 min read

The night had always been a time of mystery for Elara. While others feared the shadows, she found a sense of comfort within them. The world was different when the sun disappeared, casting its glow over the world into the veil of darkness. It was in the quiet hours of the night that she felt the most alive, as though the very air around her pulsed with unseen possibilities.

Her small town of Corliss, nestled between the quiet hills and the murmuring river, had always been a place where dreams faded as quickly as they appeared. People lived in their routines, going about their business, never thinking to look beyond the familiar. Elara, however, was not like the others. She could feel the dreams, the whispers of things unseen, calling to her in the silence of the night.

It started as a child, when she would lay in her bed and listen to the gentle rustling of the leaves outside her window. She would close her eyes and drift into sleep, only to wake in a world of swirling fog and glowing lights. Sometimes, there were voices, sometimes just the soft hum of something distant yet intimately close.

As she grew older, Elara began to question the meaning of these dreams. They were always the same — a world blanketed in darkness, with the stars above shining brightly, offering her guidance. There were moments when she felt like she was not merely dreaming but stepping into something more. A door, unseen to the waking world, opened before her in the dark, revealing places and things she couldn't explain. The images were so vivid, so real, that when she awoke, she would be left breathless, as though she had experienced something beyond the limits of sleep.

One evening, after yet another night of vivid dreams, Elara stood at the edge of the forest near her home, staring into the inky blackness. The moon was barely visible, shrouded behind the heavy clouds. The air was thick with the scent of pine, and the faint rustle of leaves whispered in the wind. Tonight felt different. There was a strange energy in the air, an undercurrent she couldn’t explain.

Her heart raced, but her feet moved of their own accord. She knew, without a doubt, that something was calling to her. Something in the dark. She stepped into the forest, each footfall quiet against the soft earth beneath her. The trees loomed tall, their branches twisting like ancient hands reaching toward the sky. The deeper she went, the more the darkness seemed to pull at her, wrapping around her like a heavy cloak.

The familiar hum of the night seemed to grow louder, more intense, until Elara could no longer tell where the forest ended and the dream began. It was as if the line between her waking life and her dreams had blurred. The stars above glowed brighter, their light illuminating the path ahead, guiding her like a silent, unseen force.

As she ventured deeper, Elara came upon a clearing, a small, hidden space where the trees seemed to part like an old, forgotten door. In the center of the clearing stood a large stone pedestal, weathered by time but still standing strong. Upon it rested a glowing crystal, pulsing with a soft, ethereal light. The crystal’s glow was so warm, so inviting, that Elara felt drawn to it.

She hesitated for a moment, uncertainty creeping into her mind. But then, the humming sound returned, louder this time, resonating deep within her chest. The crystal was calling her. Without thinking, she approached the pedestal, her hand trembling as she reached out toward the crystal. As her fingers brushed against its surface, a wave of energy coursed through her, sending a shiver down her spine.

Suddenly, the world around her seemed to shift. The trees dissolved into mist, the stars above twisted into brilliant, dancing lights, and the very air itself seemed to hum with energy. Elara felt herself being lifted, as though the ground beneath her had vanished. Her body floated weightlessly, and for a moment, she was neither here nor there. She was in a dream, but it felt so real.

The voices she had heard in her dreams, the ones that had always seemed so distant, now filled her ears. They were no longer whispers but clear and sharp, like a chorus of voices calling her name.

“Elara… Elara…”

The voices beckoned her forward, and she followed, drawn to them like a moth to a flame. The landscape around her shifted again, and now she was standing in a vast, endless field. The sky above was black, but the stars burned with an intensity she had never seen before. The field stretched out in all directions, rolling hills of soft, glowing grass.

At the center of the field stood a figure, a being cloaked in shadow, its features obscured by the darkness. But as Elara drew closer, the figure's presence seemed familiar. It was as though she had known it all her life, though she could not remember where or when.

"You've come," the figure spoke, its voice both comforting and unsettling.

"I’ve always been here," Elara replied softly, though she had never spoken those words before. "I’ve always been searching."

The figure nodded, its voice deep and resonant. "In the dark, dreams come alive. They are not just fleeting images or passing thoughts. They are the bridge to what lies beyond your world, a world of possibilities, of truths that have yet to be uncovered. But you must choose, Elara. Will you stay here in the darkness, or will you return to your world and share what you’ve found?"

The question echoed in her mind, reverberating like a heartbeat. Elara felt the weight of it, the enormity of the decision. To stay would mean embracing the unknown, to step into a realm of dreams and mysteries. But to return would mean to share this gift, to reveal the truth of what lay beyond the world of the waking.

For a moment, she hesitated. But then she knew what she had to do.

“I will return,” Elara whispered, her voice steady. “But I will not forget. The dreams will not fade.”

The figure smiled, and with a soft wave of its hand, the world around her dissolved once more. Elara awoke on the forest floor, the crystal still glowing faintly in her hand. The night was still and quiet, but she knew that nothing would ever be the same again.

She stood slowly, brushing the leaves from her clothes, the weight of the experience settling within her. As she made her way back to her village, the stars above her seemed to shine brighter, as though they, too, knew that dreams in the dark had come alive — and they would never fade.
