Seojin stood at the mouth of the cave, his heart pounding in his chest as he strained to hear any sign of his brother. The bright light of day contrasted sharply with the darkness that had engulfed them just moments before. Panic surged through him, twisting his stomach into knots. Jaeha was still inside, fighting for their freedom while Seojin was forced to stand helplessly outside.
“Jaeha!” he shouted again, his voice breaking. Silence echoed back, thick and suffocating. The weight of uncertainty pressed down on him, a heavy cloak of fear that threatened to consume him.
He turned, scanning the surrounding woods for any sign of Hojin or his guards. He couldn’t just wait here—he had to do something. Taking a deep breath, Seojin steeled himself, focusing on the bond he shared with Jaeha. No matter how far apart they were, he could feel his brother’s presence. They were twins, after all, linked by a connection that transcended the physical realm.
The sound of rustling branches snapped him back to reality. Seojin's heart raced as he prepared for an imminent threat, his hands trembling around the hilt of his dagger. But instead of Hojin’s guards, it was Jaeha who emerged from the cave, his expression fierce yet strained.
“Seojin!” Jaeha called out, relief flooding his voice as he spotted his brother. The moment their eyes met, an unspoken understanding passed between them—neither of them was truly safe until they were together.
“Are you okay?” Seojin rushed forward, taking Jaeha’s face in his hands, searching for any signs of injury. Jaeha looked battered but unharmed, and Seojin’s heart swelled with gratitude.
“I’m fine,” Jaeha said, though his breath was heavy and his brow glistened with sweat. “We need to move. Hojin will come after us.”
“Where do we go?” Seojin asked, glancing around the unfamiliar terrain. The dense forest loomed ahead, its shadows dancing ominously in the sunlight.
“North. There’s a small village where we can find shelter,” Jaeha replied, his voice steady despite the urgency. “We’ll find a way to regroup there.”
Without wasting another moment, the twins plunged into the cover of the trees, moving quickly but quietly through the underbrush. Every rustle of leaves sent adrenaline coursing through Seojin, heightening his senses. They could be followed at any moment, and the thought propelled him forward.
As they ran, Seojin felt Jaeha’s presence beside him, a constant reminder of their bond. No matter how dire the circumstances, as long as they had each other, they could face anything. The world around them faded, and all that mattered was the rhythm of their footsteps and the shared breath of determination.
“Do you think he’ll come after us?” Seojin asked breathlessly, unable to shake the worry gnawing at his insides.
“I don’t know,” Jaeha admitted, his voice low. “Hojin is unpredictable. But I won’t let him take you from me.”
Seojin nodded, the weight of Jaeha’s promise hanging in the air. “We’ll find a way to stop him. We can’t let him control our lives.”
Minutes stretched into what felt like hours as they navigated through the forest. The trees stood tall and watchful, their leaves whispering secrets of the wind. Jaeha led the way, his instincts sharp, while Seojin stayed close, drawing strength from their connection.
Finally, they broke through the thick foliage, emerging onto a dirt path that led toward the distant village. Relief washed over Seojin, but it was short-lived. The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows that seemed to stretch ominously toward them.
“We need to hurry,” Jaeha urged, glancing over his shoulder as if he could sense Hojin’s presence lurking just out of sight. “Stay close.”
They quickened their pace, hearts racing with both fear and determination. As they approached the village, a sense of safety began to envelop them. But Seojin knew better than to let his guard down; the danger wasn’t over yet.
Once inside the village, they moved stealthily, avoiding the curious gazes of villagers who were beginning to gather for the evening. Seojin kept his head low, sticking close to Jaeha as they slipped into an alleyway, their breathing still ragged from their escape.
“We should find a place to hide,” Jaeha whispered, scanning their surroundings. “Somewhere we can rest and plan our next move.”
Seojin nodded, his eyes searching for a potential sanctuary. Just ahead, a small inn came into view, its warm lights flickering invitingly. It seemed like the perfect place to find temporary refuge.
“Let’s go there,” Seojin suggested, pointing toward the inn. “It looks safe.”
Jaeha hesitated for a moment, weighing the risks. But as the sound of footsteps echoed behind them, urgency overcame caution. “We don’t have time. Let’s move!”
They entered the inn, quickly slipping through the wooden door and into the dimly lit space. The innkeeper looked up, surprise flickering across his face before he nodded in understanding. “You two look like you’ve seen a ghost. What brings you here?”
“Just passing through,” Jaeha replied, his voice calm but edged with tension. “We need a room for the night.”
“Of course,” the innkeeper said, gesturing for them to follow him. Seojin felt a wave of gratitude wash over him; for now, they were safe.
As they settled into the small room, Seojin turned to Jaeha, the weight of their situation crashing down on him. “What do we do now?”
Jaeha took a deep breath, his expression softening for the first time since their escape. “We rest. We gather our thoughts and figure out our next steps. We’re stronger together, Seojin. We’ll find a way to defeat Hojin.”
Seojin nodded, the warmth of Jaeha’s words igniting a flicker of hope within him. They were bound by blood and spirit, two halves of a whole. No matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together.
As the night settled around them, Seojin leaned against the wall, feeling the pulse of Jaeha’s presence beside him. The uncertainty of their future loomed, but within the darkness, the promise of their bond shone brighter than any star.
