Chapter 53: The Confrontation
Twins Mirrored Souls

The air in the cave felt electric, charged with tension as the distant rustling grew louder. Seojin’s heart pounded in his chest, each beat echoing in his ears like a war drum. He tightened his grip around the dagger, the cold metal grounding him amidst the rising anxiety.
“Stay close,” Jaeha instructed, his voice a low whisper that barely cut through the silence. He moved to the front, positioning himself as a shield between Seojin and the entrance, every muscle in his body taut and ready for a fight.
The rustling continued, now punctuated by hushed voices that slipped into the cave like ghosts. Jin glanced nervously at Jaeha, who nodded, indicating for him to stay vigilant. They waited, breaths held, as the sounds of their pursuers approached.
Then, out of the shadows, a figure emerged. Seojin’s breath hitched as he recognized the silhouette—Hojin, flanked by two burly guards. The nobleman’s sharp features were illuminated by the flickering torchlight, his eyes glinting with malicious delight.
“Well, well, if it isn’t the prince and his beloved twin,” Hojin taunted, stepping forward with an arrogant swagger. “I must say, I expected you to be more… elusive.”
Jaeha’s expression hardened, his jaw clenched tight. “What do you want, Hojin?”
“Just a friendly chat,” Hojin replied, feigning innocence. “I wouldn’t want you to forget the consequences of your little escapade. You can’t hide in this cave forever.”
Seojin could feel Jaeha’s anger radiating off him, a palpable force that sent a shiver down his spine. “We’re not afraid of you,” Jaeha spat, his sword raised. “If you want a fight, I’ll give you one.”
Hojin’s laughter echoed in the cave, cruel and mocking. “You think you can take me on alone? You may have been trained by the best, but your skills won’t save you now.”
Seojin's heart raced as he felt the impending clash in the air. He wanted to argue, to stand up for himself and Jaeha, but fear clamped down on his voice. Instead, he glanced at Jaeha, seeking reassurance in his brother’s fierce gaze.
“Let’s end this now,” Jaeha challenged, stepping forward. “You’re a coward hiding behind your men.”
Hojin’s eyes narrowed. “Perhaps. But I have something you don’t—a loyalty that binds them to me. They will follow my orders without question.”
“And what’s your endgame?” Jaeha pressed, his grip tightening around his sword. “Do you think taking Seojin away will make you king?”
Hojin smirked, the flickering torchlight casting shadows across his face. “You underestimate the power of perception, my dear Jaeha. It’s not just about being the strongest. It’s about appearing untouchable.”
With a sudden motion, Hojin gestured to his guards, who moved forward with weapons drawn. Seojin felt a rush of panic surge through him. “Jaeha!”
“Stay back!” Jaeha shouted, positioning himself protectively in front of Seojin. The confrontation was inevitable, and Seojin knew there was no escape.
Jaeha charged forward, sword glinting as he clashed with Hojin’s guard. The metallic ring of blades filled the cave, a cacophony that drowned out all else. Seojin stood frozen for a moment, horror gripping him, until Jin pulled him back, urging him to stay out of the fight.
“Don’t just stand there! We have to help him!” Jin exclaimed, eyes wide with fear.
Seojin shook his head, desperation flooding his voice. “We can’t, Jin! We’ll only get in the way!”
Jaeha was fighting fiercely, his movements a blur of precision and strength as he parried strikes, countering with his own. But Hojin’s guards were relentless, and Seojin’s heart raced with every blow Jaeha delivered, fear for his brother’s safety clawing at him.
Then, with a sudden lunge, one of the guards knocked Jaeha off balance. Seojin’s heart dropped as he watched Jaeha stumble, vulnerability flashing across his face. It was a moment of hesitation that Hojin seized upon.
“Now!” Hojin shouted, lunging forward with a dagger aimed directly at Jaeha.
In that instant, something primal ignited within Seojin. He couldn’t just stand by and watch his brother get hurt. With a surge of courage, he charged into the fray, dagger raised, aiming for Hojin.
“Get away from him!” Seojin shouted, his voice fierce despite the trembling in his hands.
Hojin turned, surprise flashing across his face, but it was too late. Seojin lunged forward, the dagger slicing through the air, and caught Hojin off guard. The blade grazed his arm, drawing blood, and Hojin hissed in pain.
“Fool!” Hojin roared, stepping back to regain his composure. “You dare to attack me?”
“I dare to protect my brother!” Seojin replied, heart racing as he stood defiantly next to Jaeha.
Jaeha’s eyes widened, pride and admiration mingling with concern. “Seojin, you shouldn’t—”
“Don’t! We fight together!” Seojin insisted, feeling the adrenaline coursing through him.
Hojin’s guards hesitated, glancing at their leader, who was now visibly enraged. “Get rid of them!” Hojin ordered, fury igniting his voice.
With renewed energy, Jaeha swung his sword, deflecting an incoming attack while Seojin steadied himself, gripping his dagger tighter.
They were outnumbered, but they had each other. And together, they would stand against the darkness that threatened to tear them apart.
