Chapter 48: The Escape

Twins Mirrored Souls

By Hadia SirajPublished about a year ago 4 min read

The ground trembled violently beneath Jaeha and Seojin as they raced toward the entrance of the dimly lit cave, the chaos of their surroundings fading into a blur of dust and fear. Jaeha’s heart raced, not only from the adrenaline of battle but from the urgency of needing to protect Seojin at all costs.

“Keep running!” Jaeha urged, his voice strained as he pulled Seojin along, his grip firm and unwavering. “We can’t let Hojin trap us here!”

Seojin felt a surge of panic threatening to overwhelm him, but he pushed it aside. Jaeha’s presence was like a lifeline, grounding him even amidst the chaos. “What about Hojin?” he called out, glancing back over his shoulder. The cave was collapsing, rocks tumbling down from the ceiling as Hojin’s final desperate act of vengeance echoed in the distance.

“He made his choice!” Jaeha shouted, his tone leaving no room for doubt. “We have to focus on our escape!”

They rounded a corner, the flickering torchlight illuminating their path. Jaeha’s mind raced as they dashed forward. He couldn’t shake the feeling that this wasn’t just an escape; it was a turning point. With Hojin’s defeat, they had a chance to reclaim their lives, but only if they could get out of this collapsing prison.

“Jaeha!” Seojin gasped, breathless. “We can’t just leave him! He’s still—”

“No!” Jaeha interrupted, a fire igniting in his chest. “He made his choice the moment he threatened you. Our safety is paramount. We can’t afford to be trapped here because of his madness!”

The urgency in Jaeha’s voice snapped Seojin back to the present. He understood the weight of the decision. They were not responsible for Hojin’s actions, no matter how conflicted he felt. They had to survive.

As they approached the cave’s exit, a loud rumble echoed behind them, sending a fresh wave of terror through Seojin. “Hurry!” he urged, his pulse quickening. “It’s going to collapse!”

With every ounce of strength, they sprinted toward the opening. The air grew thick with dust, making it hard to breathe as rocks continued to tumble down. Jaeha and Seojin were nearly to safety when a massive boulder crashed down, blocking the path behind them.

“Jaeha!” Seojin cried, dread pooling in his stomach. “We can’t let it fall!”

“Push!” Jaeha shouted, determination fueling his actions. They turned and shoved against the rock with all their might. “Together!”

With a collective effort, they managed to shift the boulder just enough to create a narrow gap. “Go!” Jaeha urged, ushering Seojin through. “I’ll follow!”

Seojin scrambled through the opening, his heart pounding in his chest. “Jaeha!” he called, anxiety washing over him as he turned back, seeing Jaeha struggle against the massive stone.

“I’m right behind you!” Jaeha promised, his voice strained but steady. With one last push, he squeezed through just as the ground shook again, rocks tumbling down behind him.

They stumbled into the open air, the cool breeze washing over them like a cleansing tide. Seojin took a moment to catch his breath, the vastness of the night sky overhead a stark contrast to the chaos they had just escaped.

Jaeha fell to his knees beside him, panting heavily. “We made it,” he gasped, relief flooding through him. But even as they celebrated their narrow escape, a deep sense of unease lingered in the air. The battle might have ended, but Hojin’s shadow loomed large.

“What now?” Seojin asked, his heart still racing. “Hojin won’t stop. He’ll come after us.”

Jaeha’s jaw tightened as he looked up at the stars. “We’ll face him together, as we always have. But first, we need to regroup and gather our strength.”

Seojin nodded, determination flickering to life within him. “And find a way to end this for good.”

As they began to walk away from the cave, the reality of their situation settled heavily upon them. They had narrowly escaped, but the world outside was just as treacherous. Jaeha’s mind whirred with strategies and plans, but most importantly, he needed to ensure Seojin’s safety above all.

“Let’s find shelter,” Jaeha suggested, glancing around. “We need to be hidden until we figure out our next move.”

“Do you think there’s somewhere nearby?” Seojin asked, scanning the horizon.

“I know a place,” Jaeha replied, a spark of hope igniting in his chest. “An old sanctuary, hidden from prying eyes. We can rest and plan our next steps.”

Together, they set off into the night, the weight of their shared experiences pulling them closer. They had fought against impossible odds, but the bond they shared made them stronger than any weapon.

As they walked, Jaeha felt a renewed sense of purpose. He would protect Seojin, no matter the cost. Their love was a fire that could not be extinguished, even in the darkest of times.

With each step they took, they moved further away from the chaos of the cave and closer to a future that they could shape together. The night was fraught with uncertainty, but as long as they had each other, they would find their way.
