Chapter 4: The Cage of Desire

Twins Mirrored Souls

By Hadia SirajPublished about a year ago 4 min read

The heavy door shut with an echoing thud, plunging Seojin into a darkness deeper than he had ever known. The flickering light from the torches outside barely penetrated the room, casting eerie shadows on the stone walls. Seojin’s heart raced as he turned to face Jaeha, whose expression was a tumult of possessiveness and longing.

“What have you done?” Seojin’s voice was barely a whisper, thick with disbelief and fear.

Jaeha stepped closer, his demeanor shifting from domineering to almost tender. “I’ve done what I had to do to keep you safe,” he said softly, reaching out to brush a stray strand of hair from Seojin’s forehead. “I will protect you from the kingdom, from those who don’t understand us.”

Seojin flinched at Jaeha’s touch, though he knew his brother meant well. “This isn’t protection, Jaeha. It’s imprisonment.”

The realization settled heavily in the pit of Seojin’s stomach. He was trapped, not just physically but emotionally, as Jaeha’s love morphed into something darker. Seojin felt the walls closing in around him, squeezing the breath from his lungs.

“Imprisonment?” Jaeha echoed, hurt flashing across his features. “This is our sanctuary, Seojin. Here, we can be ourselves, without fear of judgment.”

“Being ourselves doesn’t mean being confined,” Seojin replied, his voice firm despite the tremor beneath. “You can’t force me to love you, Jaeha.”

Jaeha’s expression hardened. “I’m not trying to force you. I’m trying to protect what is ours. We are bound by fate. You are my other half.”

Seojin shook his head, fighting against the tide of emotions threatening to pull him under. “You’re my brother. That’s all we are.”

With a swift movement, Jaeha closed the distance between them, grabbing Seojin’s wrist once more, his grip firm yet gentle. “You don’t understand,” he murmured, leaning in closer, their foreheads nearly touching. “I’ve loved you since we were children. I cannot bear the thought of losing you to anyone else. The throne, the council, the kingdom—they all want to keep us apart.”

Seojin felt a swirl of conflicting emotions within him. The love he had always known from Jaeha now felt tainted, wrapped in layers of obsession and possessiveness. “Jaeha, please,” he said, his voice breaking. “You’re not thinking clearly.”

“I’m thinking clearly,” Jaeha countered, his eyes fierce. “This is the only way. You will understand soon enough.”

With that, Jaeha stepped back, leaving Seojin breathless. He glanced around the chamber, noting the sparse furnishings: a simple bed, a small table, and a single window barred with iron bars. It was a far cry from the luxurious surroundings he had known, and yet, this was where he would be forced to stay.

“Why can’t you see?” Seojin asked, frustration bubbling to the surface. “You’re going to be king. You have responsibilities—”

“I have only one responsibility,” Jaeha interrupted, his voice low and threatening. “To protect you.”

“And what about me? What about my choices?” Seojin felt tears pricking at the corners of his eyes. “This isn’t love, Jaeha. It’s control.”

“Love is control,” Jaeha replied, his expression resolute. “And I will not let anyone take you from me. Not the kingdom, not the council, and certainly not you.”

Seojin’s heart sank further as he watched the determination in Jaeha’s eyes. The truth was terrifying—Jaeha had crossed a line that could not be uncrossed. This was no longer about love; it was about possession. Seojin could feel the cage closing around him, and he didn’t know how to escape.

“I can’t do this,” Seojin said, his voice choked with emotion. “I need to go back. I need to see the world beyond these walls.”

“Seojin, listen to me,” Jaeha said, his tone shifting to something softer, more desperate. “If you leave this room, you’ll be exposed to dangers you can’t even fathom. There are enemies everywhere—people who would use you to get to me.”

“And what if I want to choose my own dangers?” Seojin retorted, anger bubbling over. “What if I want to live my own life, away from this obsession?”

“Then you’ll be walking straight into a trap.” Jaeha’s eyes darkened, his voice dropping to a whisper. “I can’t allow that. I won’t allow it.”

Seojin took a deep breath, trying to regain control over his emotions. “I refuse to be your prisoner, Jaeha. I refuse to be your possession.”

Jaeha’s expression flickered momentarily, but it was quickly replaced by a cold determination. “You may see this as imprisonment, but I see it as a sanctuary. I will give you everything you desire, Seojin. All you have to do is stay.”

The weight of Jaeha’s words hung in the air like a dark cloud, and Seojin could feel the pull of his brother’s obsession wrapping around him like a noose. There was no escaping it. Even as he fought against it, a part of him was drawn to the intensity of Jaeha’s love, the fervor that ignited something deep within him.

“Jaeha…” Seojin whispered, his voice trembling. “This isn’t what I want.”

Jaeha stepped forward again, his gaze unwavering. “What do you want, Seojin? What do you truly want?”

Seojin opened his mouth to respond, but no words came. The truth was, he didn’t know what he wanted anymore. The line between love and obsession had blurred, and in that uncertainty, Seojin felt his resolve wavering.

“Just trust me,” Jaeha said softly, reaching out to cup Seojin’s cheek. “I will make you understand.”

As Jaeha leaned in closer, his breath warm against Seojin’s skin, a spark of fear and excitement ignited within him. He was caught in a web of emotions, with no clear path ahead.

In that moment, Seojin realized he was no longer just a prince—he was a pawn in a dangerous game, one that Jaeha was determined to win.
