Chapter 25: The Weight of Truth

CRACKS

By Hadia SirajPublished about a year ago 4 min read

Elara stepped into her apartment, the familiar warmth of home wrapping around her like a comforting embrace. But tonight, it felt different. She could feel the heaviness of her encounter with Kieran weighing on her, the lingering emotions swirling within her like a storm. A deserved to know everything—about Kieran, about her feelings, about the past she was trying to escape.

A was in the kitchen, the soft sound of sizzling vegetables filling the air as he prepared dinner. The aroma wafted through the apartment, and for a moment, it made her heart swell with affection. A was a rock in her chaotic world, always providing comfort and stability. But now, with the truth clawing at her insides, she knew she had to be honest.

“Hey,” she said, trying to muster a smile as she walked in. “What’s cooking?”

A turned, his face lighting up at the sight of her. “Just some stir-fry. I thought we could have a nice dinner together. How was your day?”

“It was… interesting,” Elara replied, her heart racing as she took a seat at the small kitchen table. “Can we talk about something first?”

A’s expression shifted slightly, concern etching his features. “Of course. Is everything okay?”

She took a deep breath, the words getting caught in her throat. “I met with Kieran.”

A’s face went still, and Elara could see the tension ripple through him. “You did?”

“Yeah,” she said, her voice steady despite the turmoil within her. “He reached out to me, and I thought it would be best to confront him.”

“What did he want?” A asked, his tone cautious but steady.

“He wanted to explain himself,” she replied, her fingers fidgeting nervously. “He said he’s changed and that he regrets how things ended between us.”

A’s brow furrowed, and she could see the hurt flickering in his eyes. “And what do you think? Do you believe him?”

“I don’t know,” Elara admitted, feeling the weight of her honesty. “Part of me wants to hate him for what he did, but I also can’t deny the history we share. It’s complicated.”

A sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I can’t pretend to understand how you feel, but I wish you had told me sooner. I don’t like the idea of you meeting with him.”

“I know, and I’m sorry,” Elara said, guilt washing over her. “I didn’t want to hurt you. But I felt like I needed to confront my past. I had to see him to truly move on.”

“And now that you’ve seen him, how do you feel?” A asked, his voice steady but tinged with concern.

“I feel… a sense of closure,” she said slowly. “I realized that while I still care for him, I don’t want to go back to that life. I’m with you now, and you make me happier than I ever was with him.”

A looked at her, his eyes searching for the truth in her words. “So, you don’t have feelings for him anymore?”

“I don’t,” she said firmly, the conviction in her voice growing. “I love you, A. I know that now more than ever. Kieran was a chapter in my life that needed to end, and I needed to face it to fully commit to you.”

A’s shoulders relaxed slightly, and a soft smile began to form on his lips. “That’s all I needed to hear. I want you to be happy, and if facing your past is what you need, then I’ll support you.”

“Thank you,” Elara said, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. “I was scared to tell you. I didn’t want to hurt you or complicate things between us.”

“Nothing can complicate us more than not being honest with each other,” A replied, reaching across the table to take her hand. “You’re important to me, and I want to be there for you through everything.”

Tears prickled at the corners of Elara’s eyes as she squeezed his hand. “I don’t deserve you.”

A chuckled softly, his eyes sparkling with affection. “You’re right, but I’m not going anywhere. We’ll figure this out together.”

They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, the tension from before dissipating as they focused on each other. The warmth of their connection filled the room, reminding Elara why she had chosen A in the first place.

“Okay, enough about Kieran,” A said, breaking the moment. “Let’s eat before the food gets cold.”

Elara laughed, grateful for the light-hearted shift in the conversation. “Sounds good to me. What did you make?”

As they shared a meal, Elara felt the weight of her past lifting slightly, replaced by the joy of the present. They laughed and joked, the bond between them deepening with every shared glance. A made her feel seen, cherished, and, most importantly, loved.

After dinner, they moved to the couch, snuggling under a blanket as they turned on a movie. Elara leaned her head against A’s shoulder, feeling safe in his presence. But as the film played on, her mind wandered back to Kieran. What would happen if he tried to contact her again?

The thought nagged at her, a reminder of the unresolved feelings that lingered beneath the surface. But for now, she pushed those worries aside, focusing on the warmth of A beside her.

As the credits rolled, A turned to her, his expression serious. “You know, if you ever want to talk more about Kieran or anything else, I’m here, right?”

“Thank you, A. I really appreciate that,” she replied, feeling the sincerity in his words. “But I think I’m ready to let go of that chapter for good.”

“Good,” A said, a smile breaking through. “Because I’m not going anywhere. You and me, we’re in this together.”

Elara smiled back, feeling a sense of hope blossoming in her chest. She had faced her past, and now, with A by her side, she was ready to embrace whatever the future held. Together, they could conquer anything.

As they settled in for the night, Elara felt a sense of peace envelop her. No matter what had happened in the past, she knew she was exactly where she was meant to be.
