Chapter 23: The Temptation of the Past

CRACKS

By Hadia SirajPublished about a year ago 5 min read

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow through Elara's apartment as she sat on her couch, her heart racing. The weight of Kieran's message pressed down on her, demanding her attention. She couldn’t ignore it, not after the conversation she had just had with A. But what did Kieran want? And why did his words still hold so much power over her?

Elara’s phone buzzed again, interrupting her thoughts. She glanced down, her heart sinking as she saw Kieran’s name light up the screen once more.

Kieran: I know you’re there, Elara. We need to talk. I promise this will be the last time I ask. Just give me one chance to explain.

Her stomach twisted at the thought. The last time they had spoken had ended in chaos and hurt feelings. Did she really want to open that door again?

With shaky hands, she typed back a simple response.

Elara: I don’t think we have anything to talk about, Kieran. It’s over.

Her finger hovered over the send button, uncertainty washing over her. But deep down, she knew this was the right thing to do. She had made her choice; she needed to stand by it.

But just as she was about to hit send, her phone buzzed again, this time with a call. Elara hesitated, staring at the screen. The name “Kieran” loomed large, and the memories flooded her mind—the laughter, the love, the pain. It felt like a siren song, pulling her closer to the edge of a cliff.

She finally answered, her voice barely a whisper. “Kieran.”

“Elara,” he said, his voice smooth yet urgent. “Please, just hear me out. I need you to understand why I reached out.”

She sighed, torn between anger and a flicker of longing. “What could you possibly say that would change anything? You had your chance.”

“I know,” he said, his tone shifting from urgency to vulnerability. “But I’ve realized things about us, about what went wrong. I miss you, Elara. And I think we can fix this if you give me the chance.”

Elara clenched her jaw, her heart racing. The very sound of his voice brought back a flood of memories, each one more bittersweet than the last. “Fix what, Kieran? You broke my heart. You made choices that hurt me. I can’t just forget that.”

“I didn’t mean for any of it to happen,” he said quickly. “I was young and stupid. But I’ve changed. I want to make it right. Can we at least meet? Just to talk, to see if there’s still something between us?”

Elara felt the walls around her heart begin to crack. She didn’t want to admit how tempting his words were. The idea of closure, of possibly understanding what had gone wrong, was alluring. But she also remembered the pain, the sleepless nights spent wondering if she would ever get over him.

“What would we even talk about?” she asked, her voice trembling. “You made your choice. You walked away, Kieran. I can’t go back to that.”

There was a long pause on the other end, and Elara could almost hear the gears turning in his mind. “What if I told you that I regret it every single day? That I’ve been trying to figure out how to win you back? I’m not asking for a relationship right away. I just want to explain.”

The sincerity in his voice tugged at something deep within her. She was a sucker for apologies, for vulnerability, and it sent a shiver of desire through her. But then she remembered A—his kindness, his patience, his unwavering support. He was everything Kieran hadn’t been, and she had fought so hard to build a life with him.

“Elara?” Kieran’s voice broke through her thoughts, pulling her back into the moment. “Will you meet me?”

Her heart pounded as she weighed her options. She didn’t want to hurt A, but she also knew that her feelings for Kieran couldn’t simply be wished away. Maybe this meeting would provide the closure she needed.

“Fine,” she finally said, her voice trembling. “I’ll meet you. But just to talk. I’m not promising anything beyond that.”

“Thank you,” Kieran replied, relief flooding his voice. “I promise I won’t waste this chance.”

They agreed to meet at a café near their old college campus—a place filled with memories of laughter and love. As she hung up, Elara felt a mix of dread and anticipation wash over her. Was she making a mistake? Would this only lead to more complications in her relationship with A?

Just then, A walked into the living room, a smile spreading across his face as he spotted her. “Hey! You look deep in thought. Everything okay?”

Elara felt a wave of guilt crash over her. She couldn’t tell him about Kieran—not yet. “Yeah, just… thinking about work. It’s been a long week,” she said, forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.

A raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. “You sure? Because you know you can talk to me about anything.”

“I know, and I appreciate it,” Elara replied, trying to sound more confident. “Just a little stressed, that’s all.”

A stepped closer, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. “Want to watch a movie tonight? We could order takeout and just relax. It’ll be good for you.”

The thought of a quiet evening with A filled her with warmth, but the thought of meeting Kieran loomed large in her mind, casting a shadow over her happiness. “That sounds nice. I’d love that,” she said, but her voice lacked enthusiasm.

As they settled in for the night, Elara found herself distracted, unable to shake the feeling that she was on the brink of something monumental—something that could shatter her already fragile relationship with A. The thought of Kieran crept in like a thief in the night, stealing her peace and leaving her with a storm of confusion.

That night, as she lay beside A, Elara couldn’t help but wonder if she was on the verge of making a grave mistake. She knew she had to be careful, but part of her was drawn to the allure of revisiting the past, of finally confronting Kieran once and for all.

With a deep breath, she closed her eyes, trying to find solace in the warmth of A’s presence. But as sleep eluded her, she knew she had to prepare herself for the meeting. Whatever happened next could change everything.
