Chapter 22: Unspoken Words

CRACKS

By Hadia SirajPublished about a year ago 4 min read

The morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow across Elara's bedroom. She lay in bed, her body still wrapped in the warmth of the sheets, but her mind was racing. Last night’s embrace with A lingered in her thoughts—a bittersweet reminder of the love they shared, yet also of the uncertainty that had begun to taint it.

As she finally pushed the covers off and swung her legs over the edge of the bed, Elara couldn’t shake the feeling of dread settling in her stomach. She had to confront her feelings. This emotional limbo couldn’t continue; it was unfair to both A and herself.

After a quick shower, Elara dressed in a simple blouse and tailored pants, trying to project confidence even as her heart raced. She glanced at the clock—she was running late. Gathering her belongings, she headed out the door, her mind still swirling with thoughts.

At the office, the atmosphere was tense. Elara could feel the weight of unspoken words hanging in the air. Her colleagues were buzzing with their usual chatter, but Elara struggled to focus. All she could think about was her conversation with A and the lingering doubts that clouded her heart.

As she settled at her desk, A walked in, a coffee in hand. His eyes brightened when he saw her, but Elara noticed the slight crease in his forehead as he approached.

“Hey, you,” he said, his voice warm but tinged with concern. “I was thinking we could have lunch together today. Just the two of us.”

Elara smiled weakly, her heart fluttering at the thought of spending time alone with him. “Yeah, that sounds nice.”

As the morning dragged on, Elara busied herself with her work, but her thoughts kept returning to what she needed to say to A. She couldn’t keep dragging them both through this uncertainty. There were things she needed to clarify, fears she needed to voice.

Finally, lunch arrived, and they headed to a nearby park. The weather was perfect, the sun shining down on them as they sat at a small picnic table. A spread out their lunch, a mix of sandwiches and fresh fruit, and they ate in comfortable silence for a moment.

But Elara felt the tension rising between them, and she knew she had to break it.

“A,” she began, her voice trembling slightly. “There’s something I need to talk to you about.”

He looked up from his sandwich, his expression shifting to one of concern. “What is it?”

Elara took a deep breath, her heart racing. “I’ve been feeling really confused lately. About everything—my past with Kieran, and my feelings for you. I don’t want to keep avoiding it.”

A set his sandwich down, his gaze steady on her. “I’ve sensed that something’s been off. I just didn’t know how to bring it up. I want you to feel comfortable talking to me about anything, Elara.”

She nodded, the sincerity in his eyes making her heart ache. “I’m sorry for being distant. I thought blocking Kieran would help me move on, but it just made everything more complicated. I realize now that I need to fully address what I’m feeling—about both of you.”

A’s expression shifted, and Elara held her breath, waiting for his response. “I appreciate your honesty,” he said finally. “But I need you to understand that you can’t keep going back to your past. It’s not fair to either of us.”

“I know,” Elara replied, her voice thick with emotion. “But I can’t pretend that Kieran didn’t mean something to me. I loved him for years, and even though I don’t want to be with him now, I feel like there are still parts of that relationship that I need to process.”

A’s expression softened, but there was an underlying tension in his posture. “I understand that, but I also need you to understand that we can’t keep having Kieran in the picture. It’s affecting us, Elara.”

She nodded, tears prickling at the corners of her eyes. “I don’t want to lose you, A. You mean so much to me. But I also don’t want to drag you into my unresolved feelings.”

A reached across the table, taking her hand in his. “I’m here for you, but you need to make a choice. If Kieran is truly behind you, you need to let him go completely. We can’t build a future together if you’re still holding onto the past.”

Elara squeezed his hand, feeling the warmth of his support. “I know you’re right. I’ve been trying to convince myself that I could navigate both worlds, but I realize now that it’s impossible.”

A nodded, his expression serious. “If you’re willing to put in the work, I’m here. I love you, and I want to make this work. But you have to be all in.”

Elara’s heart swelled at his words. She had been so focused on her own confusion that she hadn’t fully considered how much A cared for her. “I love you too, A. I’m ready to be all in. I just need some time to fully process everything.”

A smiled softly, and for a moment, the tension between them seemed to lift. “Then let’s take it one step at a time. I’m here whenever you’re ready.”

After lunch, Elara returned to the office with a newfound sense of clarity. She was still scared of the journey ahead, but at least now she had A by her side, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead together.

But as the day wore on, her phone buzzed again with a message that made her heart drop.

Unknown: Elara, I need to see you. I can’t keep waiting. Please, just one more time…

It was Kieran. A wave of panic washed over her as she stared at the screen. She had promised herself she was done with him, yet here he was, pulling her back in with his words.

She glanced at A, who was focused on his work, his brow furrowed in concentration. He had no idea about the message, about the temptation it presented. But Elara knew that this was a moment of truth.

Could she resist the pull of her past, or would Kieran’s voice once again shake the foundation of her present?
