Chapter 21: Cracks in the Foundation

CRACKS

By Hadia SirajPublished about a year ago 5 min read

The days that followed felt like they were moving in slow motion. Elara’s decision to block Kieran should have brought her peace, yet her mind remained clouded with doubts. No matter how hard she tried to focus on her relationship with A, the cracks in their foundation seemed to grow wider with every passing moment.

She spent more time in the office, working late into the night, hoping to distract herself from the overwhelming uncertainty. But the more she avoided the issue, the more it seemed to fester inside her.

One evening, Elara sat alone in her office, the hum of the air conditioner and the distant sounds of the city outside the only noises around her. It was nearly 10 PM, and the office was eerily quiet. Most of her colleagues had left hours ago, but she hadn’t been ready to go home—to face A and the uncomfortable silence that had grown between them.

Her phone buzzed on her desk, breaking the silence. She glanced at the screen and saw a message from A.

A: Hey, you okay? You’ve been staying late at work a lot lately. Just wanted to make sure everything’s alright.

Elara’s heart sank. She knew A was trying to be supportive, but every message from him felt like another reminder of how distant she had become. She hadn’t intended to pull away, but she couldn’t deny that it was happening. Their once vibrant conversations had become stilted and awkward, and every time she looked at him, the guilt gnawed at her insides.

She typed a quick response, trying to keep things light.

Elara: Yeah, everything’s fine. Just trying to catch up on work. I’ll be home soon.

But even as she sent the message, Elara knew that everything wasn’t fine. She wasn’t fine. And their relationship was far from fine.

She leaned back in her chair, rubbing her temples as the weight of her thoughts pressed down on her. Her conversation with Isla kept replaying in her mind. Relationships are hard, but you can’t let your past control your future, Isla had said. Elara knew Isla was right. But the problem wasn’t just Kieran anymore. It was her own uncertainty, her inability to fully commit to A despite everything he had done for her.

Elara’s phone buzzed again, and she glanced down, half expecting another message from A. But it wasn’t. Her breath caught in her throat as she saw the name on the screen: Kieran.

Her heart skipped a beat. She had blocked his number. How was he still messaging her?

Unknown: Elara, I know you blocked me. But I’m not giving up that easily. I still love you, and I know you feel something for me too. Please, just meet me one last time. If you don’t feel anything, I’ll leave you alone for good. But if you do…

Elara’s fingers trembled as she read the message. She had thought she was done with Kieran, that cutting off contact would be the end of it. But now he was finding other ways to reach her. And worse, a part of her couldn’t deny the tiny spark of curiosity that his message ignited. What if she met him? What if there was still something between them?

She quickly deleted the message, her heart pounding. No. She couldn’t do this. She had made her decision. Kieran was her past, and A was her present. She couldn’t let Kieran derail everything she had worked so hard to build.

But the seed of doubt had already been planted, and Elara knew it wouldn’t be so easy to ignore.

As she gathered her things and left the office, the weight of her thoughts followed her like a shadow. The streets were quiet as she walked home, her footsteps echoing in the night. Her mind raced, torn between the stability of her relationship with A and the lingering emotions that Kieran had stirred up once again.

When Elara finally arrived at her apartment, she hesitated at the door. A was inside, waiting for her. She knew he would ask her about her day, about why she had been staying late at work so often. He would be kind and understanding, just like always. And yet, the thought of facing him made her chest tighten with guilt.

She took a deep breath and unlocked the door, stepping inside. A was sitting on the couch, his eyes lighting up when he saw her.

“Hey,” he said, standing up and walking over to her. “I was starting to worry. You’ve been working late a lot this week.”

Elara forced a smile, her stomach twisting with guilt. “Yeah, sorry. Just a lot going on at work.”

A studied her face, his expression softening. “Are you sure that’s all it is? You’ve been… distant lately. I just want to make sure everything’s okay between us.”

Elara’s heart ached at his words. He didn’t deserve this—this uncertainty, this emotional distance that she had been putting between them. But how could she explain the turmoil in her heart when she didn’t fully understand it herself?

“I’m sorry,” Elara said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I didn’t mean to make you feel that way. I’ve just been… overwhelmed.”

A reached out and gently cupped her face in his hands, his touch warm and comforting. “I get it. Life can be overwhelming sometimes. But I’m here, Elara. You don’t have to go through this alone.”

Elara’s eyes filled with tears as she leaned into his touch, wishing she could erase the doubts in her mind and fully commit to the man standing in front of her. But no matter how much she tried, she couldn’t silence the nagging voice inside her that whispered that something was missing.

A kissed her forehead softly, his lips lingering for a moment before he pulled back. “I love you,” he said, his voice filled with sincerity.

Elara swallowed the lump in her throat. She wanted to say it back, to reassure him that she loved him too. But the words wouldn’t come.

Instead, she pulled him into a tight embrace, burying her face in his chest as tears silently slipped down her cheeks. A held her close, his arms wrapped around her protectively, but the distance between them felt wider than ever.

That night, as they lay in bed, Elara couldn’t sleep. She stared at the ceiling, her mind racing with thoughts of Kieran, of A, of the growing cracks in her relationship. No matter how much she wanted to ignore it, she knew that things couldn’t continue like this.

Something had to give.
