Chapter 17: Shadows of Doubt
Twins Mirrored Souls

The days that followed the confrontation in the Great Hall were filled with a tense but tentative calm. Seojin and Jaeha maintained their routine, but the atmosphere in the palace felt heavier, as if the walls themselves were holding their breath in anticipation of what might come next. The nobles had retreated for now, but Seojin knew their concerns were far from resolved.
Seojin spent much of his time with Jaeha, trying to bolster his brother’s spirits while carefully navigating the shifting dynamics within the court. Each meeting with the nobles was laden with unspoken tension, their eyes constantly assessing and weighing Jaeha’s commitment to his brother against his duties as a future king.
One evening, Seojin found himself in the training courtyard, watching Jaeha as he practiced his swordsmanship. The sunset bathed the courtyard in warm hues, the golden light casting long shadows. Jaeha moved with a fierce grace, each strike echoing his inner turmoil. Seojin couldn’t help but admire the strength and skill his brother possessed, but he also saw the weight of responsibility that lay heavily on his shoulders.
“Jaeha,” Seojin called out, stepping closer, “maybe you should take a break.”
Jaeha paused, wiping sweat from his brow as he turned to face Seojin. “I can’t afford to rest. Not now,” he replied, his voice edged with determination. “I need to be ready for anything.”
“But pushing yourself too hard won’t help. You need to find a balance,” Seojin urged, concern etched on his face. “You’re not just preparing for a fight; you’re preparing to be king.”
Jaeha’s expression softened for a moment, revealing a glimpse of the vulnerability he often concealed beneath his fierce exterior. “And what if they come for you? What if they try to use you against me?”
“They won’t,” Seojin insisted, stepping closer. “We’ve shown them that we stand united. We can’t let fear dictate our actions. I trust you, Jaeha. We’ll find a way through this together.”
Jaeha studied Seojin for a moment, the flicker of uncertainty in his eyes making Seojin’s heart ache. “You make it sound so easy, but the reality is far more complicated.”
“I know it’s hard,” Seojin replied softly, his hand reaching out to clasp Jaeha’s forearm. “But you’re not alone in this. I’ll always stand by your side, no matter what.”
Jaeha’s gaze intensified, and for a moment, Seojin felt the weight of his brother’s fierce protectiveness wrapping around him like a cloak. “I can’t lose you, Seojin. Not to anyone, not to anything.”
As the words hung in the air, the warmth of the setting sun faded, and a chill ran through the courtyard. Seojin opened his mouth to reassure Jaeha, but before he could speak, a figure appeared at the edge of the courtyard—one of the palace guards, his face pale.
“Your Grace, urgent news!” the guard called out, rushing forward. “There’s been a disturbance in the eastern sector of the kingdom. Rumors of dissent are spreading like wildfire.”
Jaeha’s demeanor shifted instantly, his body tensing as he turned to face the guard. “What kind of disturbance?”
“There have been reports of villagers gathering, expressing their discontent with the royal family’s rule. They claim that your obsession with your brother has made you unfit to lead,” the guard replied, urgency lacing his words.
Seojin felt his stomach drop. “They’re blaming you for our bond?” he asked, incredulity creeping into his voice.
“It appears so,” the guard confirmed, glancing between the brothers. “They’re calling for a new leader, one who will prioritize the kingdom over personal affections.”
“Unbelievable,” Jaeha muttered, fists clenching at his sides. “I won’t allow them to question my rule. We need to address this immediately.”
“Address it how?” Seojin interjected, fear gnawing at his insides. “If we go in too hard, it could fuel the flames of rebellion.”
“We have to show them our strength,” Jaeha replied, his voice firm. “I will not let them tarnish my name or our bond. We need to quash this dissent before it spreads any further.”
Seojin felt a mix of anger and frustration. “But you can’t just threaten them! They’re our people! We need to understand their grievances, not silence them.”
“Understanding will only make us look weak!” Jaeha snapped, his emotions spilling over. “They won’t listen to reason; they need to see that I am in control.”
Seojin stepped forward, his heart racing. “You’re not listening to me! If you go in swinging swords and threats, you will only push them further away. They need to see the compassion in you, Jaeha. You have to be the king they want, not just the king you think they need.”
Jaeha’s expression darkened, and for a moment, Seojin feared that his brother wouldn’t listen. But then, as if something shifted within him, Jaeha took a deep breath, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. “Fine. We’ll go, but we do it my way.”
Seojin’s heart raced with hope. “What do you have in mind?”
Jaeha considered for a moment, his gaze shifting to the horizon. “We’ll gather the nobles, bring them along. We’ll approach the villagers together. Show them that we stand united, that their concerns are heard.”
Seojin nodded, relief flooding through him. “That’s a start. If they see the nobility beside you, it might help quell their fears.”
“Then we move quickly,” Jaeha declared, the fire of determination reigniting in his eyes. “We’ll show them that our bond is unbreakable, and that I will not falter in my duty as king.”
As they prepared to leave, Seojin felt a mix of anxiety and hope. They were stepping into the unknown, into a situation that could either strengthen their bond or threaten everything they had built together. But he knew one thing for certain: no matter what happened, he would stand by Jaeha’s side.
The carriage ride to the eastern sector was filled with silence, the weight of the impending confrontation hanging heavily in the air. Seojin glanced at Jaeha, who sat stiffly, his jaw set with determination. The closer they got, the more Seojin could feel the tension building, both in Jaeha and in the kingdom itself.
As they arrived in the village, the atmosphere was charged with a mixture of hope and fear. Villagers gathered, their expressions wary but curious, eyes darting between Jaeha and the nobles flanking him.
Jaeha stepped forward, raising his hand for silence. “People of the kingdom!” he called out, his voice booming. “I have heard your grievances, and I am here to listen.”
The murmurs among the crowd grew louder, a mix of skepticism and anticipation. Seojin held his breath, praying that Jaeha could bridge the gap between them.
But as he watched the tension unfold, he couldn’t shake the feeling that the storm was only just beginning.
