Chapter 14: A Shadow from the Past

CRACKS

By Hadia SirajPublished about a year ago 5 min read

The next few weeks felt like a breath of fresh air for Elara. Her days were filled with work, but the weight of her past relationship with Kieran no longer loomed over her like a dark cloud. She found herself genuinely enjoying her time with A, their connection deepening with every conversation and moment shared. It was a new kind of relationship—one where she felt heard, respected, and free to be herself.

A had been true to his word, giving her space and letting things unfold naturally. Their time together was effortless, filled with laughter and mutual understanding. But despite the ease of her new relationship, Elara couldn’t shake the occasional pang of doubt that crept into her thoughts. Was she truly ready to let go of her past with Kieran? Or was she simply avoiding the unresolved feelings that still lingered?

It was a Saturday afternoon when her carefully constructed sense of peace began to waver. Elara was at her apartment, organizing some files for work, when her phone buzzed with a message from an unknown number.

Can we talk? It’s important.

She frowned, her heart sinking. There was something unsettlingly familiar about the tone of the message. After a brief hesitation, she typed a cautious response.

Who is this?

A moment later, her phone buzzed again.

Kieran. Please don’t ignore me. I just need to see you, Elara. Just once.

Elara’s heart skipped a beat, and for a moment, she was torn between frustration and a flood of old emotions she had tried so hard to push aside. She had made her decision, hadn’t she? She had told Kieran that she needed space to move on, and he had seemed to accept that. But now, here he was again, reaching out after weeks of silence, asking for another chance to talk.

Her fingers hovered over the keyboard as she debated what to say. Part of her wanted to ignore him, to keep moving forward with her life without letting him drag her back into the past. But another part of her—the part that still remembered the good moments they had shared—couldn’t help but feel a tug of sympathy.

Before she could stop herself, Elara typed a response.

Why? What’s there left to talk about?

The reply came almost instantly.

I just need closure. Please, Elara. One last conversation. After that, I’ll leave you alone if that’s what you want.

Elara’s stomach twisted. She wasn’t sure if Kieran was telling the truth or if this was just another way for him to keep her tied to the past. But the word “closure” echoed in her mind, and she realized that maybe, just maybe, she needed it too.

With a deep breath, she typed back.

Fine. We can meet. But just once.

Kieran sent the address of a small café near his apartment. The place where they had once spent countless mornings together, sipping coffee and talking about their future. It felt both nostalgic and bittersweet, but Elara was determined not to let her emotions get the best of her.

She arrived at the café an hour later, her heart racing as she stepped inside. Kieran was already there, sitting at a table near the window. He looked different—thinner, more tired—but his eyes still held the same intensity she remembered. As soon as he saw her, he stood up, a flicker of hope flashing across his face.

“Elara,” he said softly, his voice filled with a mixture of relief and regret.

“Kieran,” she replied, her tone guarded as she sat down across from him. “I’m here. What do you want to talk about?”

Kieran’s gaze dropped to the table, and for a moment, he seemed to struggle with his words. When he finally spoke, his voice was low and filled with emotion.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about us… about everything that happened,” he began. “I know I messed up, Elara. I know I hurt you in ways I didn’t even realize at the time. And I hate myself for it.”

Elara’s chest tightened at his words, the familiar ache of old wounds resurfacing. “Kieran, we’ve already been through this. I told you that I needed space to move on, and I thought you understood that.”

“I did. I do,” Kieran said quickly. “But the truth is, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you. About us. I keep replaying everything in my head, trying to figure out where it all went wrong.”

Elara took a deep breath, her hands clenched in her lap. “We were toxic for each other, Kieran. You know that as well as I do. There was so much jealousy, so much possessiveness. It wasn’t healthy.”

“I know,” Kieran admitted, his voice heavy with guilt. “But I’ve been working on myself. I’ve been seeing a therapist, trying to understand why I was like that with you. I don’t want to be that person anymore.”

Elara’s eyes widened slightly at his confession. Therapy? It was something she had never expected Kieran to do. He had always been so stubborn, so unwilling to acknowledge his own flaws. Hearing him admit to seeking help was… surprising.

“I’m glad you’re getting help,” she said after a pause. “But that doesn’t change what happened between us.”

Kieran nodded slowly. “I know. I just needed to tell you that I’m sorry. Truly. For everything. I’ve been carrying this weight around, and I couldn’t move forward without at least trying to make things right.”

Elara stared at him, her emotions swirling in a confusing mix of sadness, relief, and frustration. Part of her wanted to believe him, to believe that he had really changed. But another part of her—the part that had lived through the worst of their relationship—couldn’t forget the pain he had caused her.

“Kieran,” she said carefully, “I appreciate your apology. I really do. But I can’t go back. I’ve moved on, and I need you to respect that.”

Kieran’s face fell, but he nodded in understanding. “I get it. I really do. I’m not asking for another chance. I just… I needed to see you one last time. To say goodbye properly.”

Elara’s heart softened at his words. There was a finality in his tone that she hadn’t expected, and for the first time in a long time, she felt a sense of closure settling over her.

“Goodbye, Kieran,” she said softly, her voice tinged with both sadness and resolve. “I hope you find what you’re looking for.”

Kieran gave her a small, sad smile. “You too, Elara.”

As she stood up to leave, Kieran didn’t try to stop her. He simply watched as she walked away, his expression a mixture of longing and acceptance.

Elara stepped out of the café and into the cool autumn air, a strange sense of peace washing over her. For the first time, she truly felt free from the past. Kieran was no longer a shadow lurking in the background of her life. She had made her peace with him, and now, she could move forward without looking back.

Her phone buzzed as she walked down the street. It was a message from A: How’s your day going?

Elara smiled as she typed back: Better than I expected.

Want to talk about it? A responded.

I’ll tell you everything later, she replied. But for now, I just want to see you.

A’s reply was immediate. I’m on my way.

As she slipped her phone back into her pocket, Elara felt a weight lift off her shoulders. She didn’t know what the future held, but she knew one thing for sure—she was ready to embrace it.
