“Businesswoman!” Craig Dagger exclaimed.
“Shhh….” The roles had been reversed. Loreen suggested for the librarian to be quiet this time.
“Excuse me. What can I help you with, Mrs. Breen?”
“Call me Loreen, please. I looked at the Russian books on the shelf, or what I thought were the novels….”
“Oh, those are just for show. We had to ban those books a few months ago.”
“Ban? This is a private library I helped to fund. Did I miss a board meeting somewhere?”
“No. It was a vote by the librarians to cast away those novels,” Dagger tried to reassure. It didn’t work. “Anyway, I’m sure you can buy an original manuscript of each tome.”
“Maybe…but that’s far from the point. Is Margaret here?”
“She’s on vacation this week.”
“I’ll find her on the socials. Craig, man your post. You’re guardian over expressions of the mind.”
It was as if a general had instructed a field officer on how to best defend an important installation. Dagger prepared to salute but just ran his hair through his blonde lochs.
“I will do that, Loreen.”
She left the library and told Raphael to take her home. In the back of her Goulding, she drafted a note to Margaret. As she typed, her phone notified her of a message. It showed no sender information. She wanted to delete it but the body of the text intrigued her. The wording seemed elegant and almost regal. The voice appeared to be from a fount of deep wisdom and profound knowledge.
“Who is this?” she typed. Bubbles…bubbles…then nothing. She looked outside at the grayness of the afternoon. Memories searched in her mind, twisting, tangling, grasping, making every effort to come up with something. At last, she sighed and just saved the message to her Important box.
