Businesswoman Chapter 9
The Glory of Industry
The next day after the snowstorm, Loreen Breen entered her corner office at ten in the morning. She tried to stay planted in her cushy, ergonomically superior seat. This failed. She got up from her desk and journeyed down to the construction project she had already had relations with during her time with the executives involved.
“Mrs. Breen, we realize that you have a concern about government regulators,” Donovan Goneril mentioned with a sigh.
“I have concern when my soup’s too cool. I am devastated at the idea of a government agency inspecting this site. Now, I know the snow has delayed some efforts, but this tower will be built in the next few months which will provide a greater opportunity for you all to determine just how important and necessary private inspectors are,” she explained.
Goneril sighed again. “We can only do the next phase with private sector inspections.”
“So do that.” She was like a tiny fireball, ready to melt the snow away on the project.
“If we do, that’s an extra six million dollars. The government is only charging half a mil’. This hits our bottom line.”
“Damn government inspectors. They’re only going to make matters worse. They offer no solutions, just an air of controlling free enterprise. I will not stand here and allow you to continue down this path.”
Goneril chuckled a bit. “How do you store up all that energy into that slight frame?”
“I’ve been doing it all my life. With three older brothers, I knew I had to combat the stigma of being small and raise my voice to be heard.” She then put her hands on her hips and paced in the space where the workers fitted beams. The glory of industry looked ever more promising to her. Then she smiled.
