Lisa felt nauseous. That churning, warm dizziness overwhelmed her. She sought something to settle her stomach before she really got sick. She returned to her laptop. She felt inspired to study at the First State Community College to receive a degree in Economics. She walked closer to the computer with the bottle of medicine that calmed her stomach like a raging sea easing a bit.
What made her sick remained the idea that capitalism had been the root of all business worldly. She knew better. With the information on the screen she held back the contents of her stomach. In her left hand, she jotted down notes and felt the sting of discomfort in her gut once more.
She took another swig and the feeling passed again. Her focus lasered in on the nonsense of this author who possessed a PhD. She sucked her teeth and folded her arms. She looked at her notes and they looked like a ransom note. Some letters and numbers screamed from the page and looked jagged. Finally, she threw her head back and sighed.
The knowledge that capitalism requires freedom of action for all involved also included slavery in the United States. If you don’t have humans free, then there is no capitalism. Lisa knew that. It seemed strange…that feeling of knowing better but still seeing falsehoods. Despite the grade she might get, she remained steadfast and wrote the notes and a letter to the editor of the digital textbook.
An open window blew in some fresh air that further settled her brief illness. By knowing the entire history of slavery cost her the time of pouring down the solution to calm herself.
It is with her power now that she called Loreen on a video chat. “I’ve gotta talk to you right now.”
