Businesswoman Chapter 66

Ingenuity

By Skyler SaundersPublished 11 months ago 1 min read

“We’re going to go in there with respect and dignity,” Loreen addressed Lisa, their heels clicking against the floor of the halls of Commerce in New Castle County, Delaware.

“That’s right. We’re going to be firm but not pushy,” Lisa agreed.

The two women walked into the office of Custer Maiser. He had wire rimmed glasses and graying hair. He looked up after they passed his office assistant.

“The wind turbines…they are sufficient. How are you ladies by the way?”

Loreen answered. “We’re well. The turbines—”

“The turbines are the future of this state. They spin in response to the hopes and dreams of the children,” Maiser added.

“No, sir,” Lisa piped up.

“No?!” Maiser asked, slightly surprised.

“They are ugly, cost-inefficient, and cannot come close to oil, coal, and natural gas,” Loreen championed her partner’s words.

“These turbines,” Maiser said, “are going to revolutionize energy in the state of Delaware and the country. Why not…the world?”

“Fossil fuels and nuclear power will forever be around for all intents and purposes. We’re taking steps to remind people that these sources of energy have illuminated the dark, raised standards of living, extended lifespans, and provided the highest quality of life. We must acknowledge that to the fullest.”

Maiser looked like a crack had just opened in the floor and the spirits of past people who kowtowed to his words.

“I disagree to the utmost. The globe is warming.”

“It is, I’ll allow that. But what I’m not going to do is say that humans lack the ingenuity and creativity and intelligence to solve problems with fossil fuels and not demonize them for their virtues,” Loreen expounded.

Maiser’s lower lip quivered a bit. “I suggest you continue to do your work.”

Loreen and Lisa arose to their feet and exited, with power.
