Lisa sat in the audience of the air-conditioned Court of Chancery in New Castle, Delaware. Loreen stood in front of the judge at his bench along with her lawyer Tom Pesca opposition Monsa Barrett and her legal team.
“Your honor,” Monsa’s lawyer Grayson Leitman started, “this trademark issue is going to go further unless we just dismiss it.”
“No,” Loreen’s attorney mentioned. “We’re prepared to go all the way with it.”
Loreen smiled slightly and looked down and up again. Lisa leaned into the conversation.
“If we don’t ever see eye-to-eye, I can agree to that,” Leitman proclaimed.
“Look, you’re yelling and we don’t need that,” Judge Virgil Unger chastised the attorney. He turned to Loreen’s team.
“Now, you have to come up with the information which will be applicable to this case or I’ll just dismiss it.”
Loreen looked at Lisa. In such a quick glance she still communicated to her what she wanted to do. She watched her eyes cast to the side.
“What we want is the trademarks for Businesswoman and Businessgirl,” Pesca explained. “These women have saved firms billions of dollars over the past years. My client filed for the trademark a decade ago when she first started putting in work on behalf of Delawareans. Now, Businessgirl would go with her moniker. That makes sense. We know that Lisa Conway registered her LLCs and before crusading, she ensured that her alter-ego was recognized legally.”
Lisa approached the bench. “If I may, your honor,” she stated, “I’ve been trying to maintain my composure throughout all of this. I’m just glad I don’t have to walk back any statements. This is my identity now and I’m glad there’s no jury present, not because I don’t trust they’d grant me my trademark, but because this is simpler, more direct.”
