Businesswoman Chapter 4
Scanner
As the day faded into night, Loreen Breen looked at the figures. She sipped some coffee.
“Why don’t you come to bed?” Her husband Herschel suggested.
“No, not now. I’m figuring out a way where regulations and controls won’t have to hinder this financial institution.”
“I see. I’ll wait for you.”
“Don’t,” Loreen commanded. “It’s going to take a while.” Breen looked at her, kissed her forehead and continued up the stairs.
Loreen breathed. She found various ways for the c-suite to function outside of regulations, legally. Since the company held headquarters in Newark, Delaware, it could benefit from the freedom of the First State.
Under new controls lifted by the government, the hedge fund could employ unlimited transactions and interact with clients around the clock without reporting such activity to the feds. Breen had noted that she could inform CEO Kayla Binsin in the morning. Then she heard something hit her front door. It sounded like plastic striking metal. As she leapt to her feet, she cleared the screen and only her profile picture and a place to put in her password remained.
She journeyed to the door and found an unmarked package. Loreen went back to her study for a scanner to ensure that it wasn’t an explosive device. It was not. She used the scanner twice over again to be sure. Nothing nefarious…yet. The contents of the package signalled in her sense of no sense of dread. Her heart didn’t even quicken. A smile crept onto her face. It was a construction hat. A broken and warm laugh escaped from her body. It was quiet and low but completely hearty. The hat was inscribed with her name on it but it didn’t read Loreen Breen. It showed “Businesswoman.” The helmet had no nicks and appeared totally pristine.
