Loreen poured a glass of water for her mother and her.
“I just want what’s best for you,” Lucy mentioned.
“Do you? I respect the military family you’ve forged with Daddy, but I don’t want that route.”
“Sure, get your degree. Then you can go to OCS….” her mother suggested. Loreen sipped.
“I’m not going to become a warrior. I’m going to be a captain of industry. Business is my destiny.”
Lucy walked across the kitchen floor, her heels clicking with rhythm.
“Fine. Do what you must, but you're letting down your father and me. We have given you everything. We’re supposed to have a daughter amongst the ranks, not pushing papers to make a CEO happy.”
“Who says I won’t be CEO? Who says I won’t be my own boss doing things on my terms?”
“I—” Lucy started.
“There’s nothing more to say. The idea of me being at sea or on a battlefield or behind a desk stained with blood, is not real to me.”
“But you were in Junior Marines….”
“Yes, and it got me where? Here talking to you about my endeavors to do commerce on my own.”
“Your grandmother had her own business. She was an entrepreneur but they didn’t call it that back then. She just ran an ironing business and did haircare for some dollars. She engaged in money making with those around the neighborhood. Maybe that’s where you’re getting all this from….”
“I’m not getting this from Nanny. I’m getting this all on my own.”
Lucy lifted her head. “I will support what you want to do. I don’t like it, but I’ll acknowledge it.”
“Thank you, Mom, but I would be doing this even if you didn’t support me.” Lucy looked at her and found the gleam of youth in her.
