The Rehoboth Beach air warmed Lisa. At her beach house with views of the water, she rubbed sun tan lotion on herself and played Phyllis Deaver’s Twelfth Symphony. She stretched back on the deck of her building. Then the phone rang.
“Loreen, I’m busy.”
“Busy with the sun and fun? I need you to hightail back up here. We’re talking about rockets.”
“I haven’t had a break, but I’m for the dollar. I’ll be there in a few moments.” In the back of her Goulding, she tapped at her phone like she would be rewarded in platinum coins for her efforts. Her driver, Macrella Montross, grinned as she heard Lisa’s fingernails strike against the glass.
“Lacrella, would you turn on the news, please?”
“Sure thing, ma’am.” Macrella had midnight black skin and dimples. Her fifty youthful looks belied years of struggle, defeat, and triumph. She had started her own chauffeur business. Out of a thousand other drivers, Lisa selected her.
A smirk of satisfaction crossed Macrella’s face as she knew her role had been elevated. “Simon, play the news please,” Macrella commanded with politeness.
In the background, the reports of the day echoed around the vehicle. While looking over the numbers, Lisa listened as she tapped.
As the car approached New Castle County, the two women remained focused on business. Every moment that peeled away launched them both into the future.
“Macrella, thank you for putting up with me,” Lisa sighed.
“It’s not about putting up with you, ma’am. I’m here to serve you.”
Warmth in Lisa’s cheeks filled her face. She felt she had made the right decision with Macrella. They arrived at their destination, Lisa’s office in Wilmington.
“Thanks again,” Lisa called.
“I’ll be nearby. Text when you’re ready.”
Lisa met up with Loreen.
“I’m so glad, now.”
