Strikes across Wilmington for sanitation and garbage collection left the air fetid. The stench stretched up and down the streets as can drooled waste and flies busied themselves around the trash heaps.
Entrepreneur Paul looked at the issue with a clear-eyed view. He knew the strike had to end. He sat on the board of FastClean sanitation. He relaxed with jeans and a thermal shirt and his denim jacket with the sleeves cut. A spot in his office allowed him to kick his legs on the side of the desk and sip coffee.
He talked to the CEO, Julian Barber. The top executive donned a blue suit with white shirt and no tie.
“Jules! What’s going on in there? I can smell what’s going on outside when I leave my home.”
“Yes, the workers have struck demanding medical coverage through the government. I’m refusing to apply the state’s dictates to my business…. for now.”
“That’s the point. ‘For now.’ Bug gov is going to stick its nose into your business someway.”
“Exactly. We’re at a point in reaching a deal to increase wages to cover the gap between the money asked for by insurers.”
“If we just look at the facts, the numbers, you should see a wealth in happy workers despite the ever mounting piles of refuse. They want to get back to their jobs.”
Barber looked at his hundred thousand dollar wristwatch. “I’m willing to give part of my salary to settle this dispute.”
“And it won’t be a sacrifice?”
“No.”
“How not?”
“It doesn’t hurt or damage or destroy my wealth. I’ve got other investments. I’ve played the game well….”
“Haven’t we all?” Entrepreneur Paul replied.
They shared a laugh. It was a light one but still resonated with both of them.
“Let’s focus on right now.”
