Politics in Delaware rested on the idea that both sides of the aisle could get along rather swimmingly, despite reservations. Loreen learned this over the past few years. She didn’t wave a banner for either side.

She did, however, champion the side that fought for government deregulation and stoppage of controls.

“This is our sticking point, Lor’,” Senator Erin Nast mentioned. “I want to say we can get rid of the taxes….”

“Taxes are a whole other matter we can deal with in the future,” Loreen replied with a small smile. “It’s about getting the companies and individuals unthrottled by the State.”

Senator Nast took in the words. She had been prepared for Loreen’s free marker rhetoric, but she had not readied for her enthusiasm and engagement.

With the amount of time spent in the senator's office, they shifted. Loreen wore a smart grey suit and Senator Nast donned a midnight blue suit. The senator’s face looked bemused and disgruntled slightly, at the same time. Loreen looked placid and spoke with a coolness and straightforwardness.

“Let’s look at the income tax. We should rid ourselves of federal, state, and city taxes across the board. We should reverse the taxation to consumption in Delaware.”

Senator Nast’s face crumpled like paper. “Now, you know Delawareans will run from that ruling.”

“Not if we explain to them that their production will not be touched by the government and that purchases and contracts should be taxable.”

Nast shifted again. “I don’t—I mean you’re trying to upset the cart….”

“No, Erin, I’m trying to repair the cart. There are too many taxes today. If we cannot pay for cops, warriors, and judges, we don’t deserve to be kept as a republic.”

“I disagree, but your expressive talk definitely resonates with me,” the senator announced.

“Yes.”
