Businesswoman Chapter 16
Restraint
With a flick of the wrist, Loreen Breen whipped up some batter for blueberry pancakes. Her motions remained slow and deliberate. Each gesture looked like a display of delight.
“Honey, kids, breakfast!” They had in-house services, but still opted to prepare meals from time to time.
“This looks great, Lor’,” Hershel Breen congratulated his wife with a kiss. “What does this mean, though?”
“It’s nothing. Enjoy before it gets cold.”
“I know my wife is cooking more than just pancakes. What do you have planned?”
Loreen cracked a smile. “You got me. I’m preparing to petition the government on regulations and controls.”
“I feel like I’m in a fifties sitcom…” Breen started. “What you do is extraordinary and I am in awe of your perseverance and pride. I, however, think you should show a bit more restraint.”
“Restraint? The irony is that the government is restraining the business of business and you’re telling me I need restraint?” Loreen intoned, never raising her voice. Her icy tone chilled Breen’s mind.
“I’m just saying you’re not a—”
“Superhero?”
“Exactly.”
“I am just fighting on the side of right. I’m just battling for business, every one of them, small and big. Taxes are of course an issue but what’s really throttling the entrepreneur is the clamp of regulations. I will do this.”
“You know you have my support,” Breen mentioned, sipping black coffee.
“I know. That’s why I have to hold a banner saying my position as a crusader for enterprise,” Loreen replied.
For a moment, silence fell upon the kitchen. Breen continued to eat his blueberry pancakes and Loreen scrolled through her phone. Breen raised from his seat and walked over to Loreen. He kissed her on her forehead.
“You have my full, undying support in whatever endeavors you wish to pursue.”
