The Mad Scene

A barrage of regulations and controls bombarded the Space Place in Newark, Delaware. Paul Atkinson received word that he should assist the business. He grabbed his bicycle helmet and rode down to the park and ride. He took the only private bus company in the state, Diamondways. Once he arrived at his destination, he surveyed the scene. Kids screaming their heads off; gobs of cheese stretched from plate-sized pizza slices; bells and lights clanged and flashed all around. The mad scene reminded him of his childhood. He saw the man who made the call for him to come down there.

“Entrepreneur Paul!” Exclaimed Kalman Kull. He looked both excited and tired at the same time. “Come to the back. It’s much quieter back there.”

Atkinson sat in a chair that at least provided ergonomic support.

“Water? Tea? Coffee? Tequila?” Kull suggested.

“No, I’m fine. Thank you.”

“Alright, then. Let’s get to it. While it may look like there’s a party going on, and it is, what lies underneath all of the alien laser tag and planet trekking, are government barriers to my business. What can I do?”

“What we can do is fight. If you have a tax on the soda produced, fight. If you have a regulation on just how many balls can fit inside that galactic pit, fight.”

“You make it sound so easy. What are the steps to actually ensuring that this can be done?”

“Firstly, we can petition the government––”

“Like a letter?”

“More like I go to the courts and tell them that they must cease their efforts in putting down a great small business. I will tell them that they’re hampering you. Then you will give me two million dollars.”

Kull thought for a moment. He looked around his office.

“It’s done,” he agreed.
