Advice From My Younger Self

Reflections on a Life’s Journey

By Mysterious/Cool StylePublished 9 months ago 1 min read
If only I knew then what I know now — but maybe the lessons were meant to be learned the hard way.

Story for Vocal Media:

If I could sit down with the younger version of myself — the wide-eyed dreamer full of fire, fear, and a little too much pride — I would tell him a few things. Not to scare him, not to change his path, but to offer the kind of perspective only time can teach.

1. Don’t chase perfection — chase progress.

You’ll waste too many nights thinking you’re not good enough. Truth is, perfection is a moving target, and the real beauty lies in growth. Show up. Try again. That’s where the magic happens.

2. Be kind — especially to yourself.

You’ll forgive people who don’t deserve it and carry guilt that was never yours to begin with. Let it go. Speak to yourself like you would to a friend. You’ll need that kindness more than anyone else can give.

3. Invest in people who clap when you win.

You’ll learn the difference between company and companionship. The ones who cheer for you in your absence — they’re rare. Hold onto them.

4. Take the damn picture.

You’ll skip moments because you’re insecure or too “busy.” But one day, you’ll wish you had more proof that you were there, that you lived, that you smiled.

5. Love deeply, even if it breaks you.

Heartbreak will hurt like hell. But it will also remind you that you were alive, that you were brave enough to feel. Don’t regret love — regret holding it back.

6. Chase meaning, not money.

Money matters, yes. But purpose fills your soul. Find what makes your spirit come alive — and build your life around that.

7. Silence is powerful.

Not every argument is worth your energy. Not every opinion deserves a response. Peace isn’t found in noise — it’s created in calm.

8. Say “I love you” more.

To your parents. Your siblings. Your friends. People disappear — sometimes without warning. Don’t wait to speak your heart.

If my younger self heard this, he might roll his eyes and say, “I’ll figure it out.” And that’s okay. Because sometimes the journey is the answer.
