A Stranger’s Gift

How a chance encounter led me to habits that changed everything

By Muhammad Haris khan afridiPublished 4 months ago 3 min read

I never expected my life to change because of a stranger. Honestly, I was skeptical when he handed me a small notebook on a rainy afternoon, saying only, “Try this. It helped me. Maybe it will help you too.”

At the time, I was exhausted, stuck in a rut, and drifting through days without purpose. I was overwhelmed by work, trapped in bad habits, and desperate for something—anything—to break the cycle.

That rainy day, soaked and tired, I clutched the notebook and found myself curious enough to open it. Inside were five simple habits the stranger had written down—habits that had transformed his life. Little did I know, those words would become my roadmap to a better me.

Habit 1: Rise Before the World Wakes

The stranger’s first habit was to wake up early—before the noise and chaos of the day began. I scoffed at first. I’m not a morning person, I thought. But curiosity pushed me to try.

The next morning, I set my alarm thirty minutes earlier than usual. When it rang, I felt tempted to hit snooze, but I remembered the stranger’s words. I got up.

The house was quiet, the air crisp. For the first time in months, I had space to breathe. I journaled my thoughts, made a simple plan for the day, and felt calm instead of rushed.

Soon, those early mornings became my sanctuary—a time to focus on myself before everything else demanded attention.

Habit 2: Move, Even If Just a Little

The notebook suggested daily movement—nothing extreme, just a bit of activity to get the blood flowing. I’d avoided exercise, seeing it as a chore I could skip.

But that day, I put on my sneakers and took a short walk around the block. It was awkward at first, but by the time I returned, I felt lighter, clearer.

Days later, I started adding stretches and short workouts at home. It didn’t matter that I wasn’t perfect; what mattered was showing up, moving my body, and caring for it.

That small change boosted my energy and mood in ways I never expected.

Habit 3: Power Down to Power Up

The stranger emphasized limiting screen time, especially before bed. He called it “digital detox” and said it was key to better sleep and peace of mind.

I was addicted to my phone—scrolling social media until my eyes hurt and my brain was buzzing. I decided to try putting my phone away an hour before bed.

Instead, I read a book, listened to soft music, or simply sat in silence. Slowly, my sleep improved. I felt rested, less anxious, and more present.

That habit helped me reclaim quiet moments, which became precious.

Habit 4: Count Your Blessings, Big and Small

Gratitude was next. The stranger wrote about writing down three things he was grateful for each day, no matter how small.

At first, it felt forced. What could I really be grateful for in such a stressful life? But I tried anyway.

I found myself appreciating the warmth of my morning coffee, a friend’s kind message, even the sound of rain against the window.

Gratitude shifted my mindset. Instead of dwelling on what was wrong, I noticed what was right. It was a subtle but powerful change.

Habit 5: Learn to Say No Without Guilt

Finally, the notebook urged me to set boundaries and say “no” when needed.

This was the hardest habit. I was a yes-person—saying yes to extra work, social obligations, and favors until I was overwhelmed and exhausted.

Learning to say no felt like reclaiming my time and energy. I realized it wasn’t rude to protect myself; it was necessary.

Saying no allowed me to focus on what truly mattered, and that made me happier and more productive.

The Unexpected Gift

The stranger’s gift wasn’t just a notebook. It was a second chance.

Over weeks and months, I adopted these five habits. Life didn’t become perfect overnight, but I changed. I became more intentional, calmer, and more connected to myself.

Sometimes, change arrives in unexpected forms—a rainy day, a stranger’s kindness, a simple notebook.

I still wonder who that man was, but I’m endlessly grateful. Because of him, I found the tools to rewrite my story.

What If You Took the Gift?

You don’t need a stranger or a notebook to start changing your life. The power is already inside you.

Try one habit today. Wake up ten minutes earlier, take a short walk, turn off your phone before bed, write down what you’re grateful for, or say no to something you don’t want to do.

Small steps can lead to big change.

And who knows? Maybe one day, you’ll be the stranger handing someone else the gift that changes their life
