Hello everyone, today I will review the movie "Les Misérables", a famous literary work by the great French writer Victor Hugo. The movie is full of humanity, depth, and emotion about the fate of people and the struggle against difficulties. One of the most outstanding characters in the work is Jean Valjean, a man who was sentenced to 19 years in prison for only stealing a loaf of bread. During those 19 years, he suffered countless humiliations.
At the beginning of the story, Jean Valjean was only 17 years old. He stole a loaf of bread for his starving nephew. Despite this act being motivated by family love, he was sentenced to 5 years in prison for theft. Throughout his time in prison, he not only suffered physically but also faced humiliation. These years were not only a legal sentence but also a fierce struggle against despair. At that time, he was sentenced to 5 years, but due to multiple escapes, his sentence was increased to 19 years. It must be said that at that time, being in prison was synonymous with death. Because life in prison was more miserable than death. The wardens forced the prisoners to work hard labor without any rest. (A01hd76Gh)
Today is Jean Valjean's last day in this earthly hell. Finally, after countless years, he has awaited the day of his release from prison. His miserable life here is about to end, but the warden still tries to make things difficult for him. He forces Jean Valjean to carry a piece of wood weighing several hundred kilograms, a task that seems impossible for anyone else. But with his extraordinary strength, Jean Valjean easily tossed the piece of wood in front of the warden, silencing him. (B01d8IJ90)
The warden could do nothing but hand him the release paper. However, what stunned Jean Valjean was that the paper explicitly stated he was an extremely dangerous individual, requiring him to report his whereabouts regularly; otherwise, he would be imprisoned again. (C0133jd89Ym)
Jean Valjean felt utter indignation. He had only stolen a loaf of bread to save his starving niece, and for that, he had paid with 19 years of imprisonment. Yet now, instead of being free, he was labeled a dangerous criminal. Although he felt deep injustice and sorrow, he knew these prejudices could not be easily changed. The warden still believed that once a criminal, always a criminal. He was forced to keep his sense of justice in his heart to protect the law-abiding citizens. Despite the resentment in his heart, he could only walk away silently, telling himself: "A gentleman takes revenge, even if it takes ten years." (D018js7Jjd)
But even if he escaped from prison, it was only to enter another cage of confinement. He wandered everywhere looking for work, but no one would hire a dangerous person. Adults insulted him, and children learned to mock him on the streets. (A023jJH97)
When night came, the hotel owner wouldn't even let him sleep in the horse stall, afraid he would dirty the place. With no other choice, Jean Valjean trudged through the snow in the night. When he reached a graveyard and was about to sit down, an old man suddenly appeared. It turned out this wasn't a graveyard, but a church. The priest invited him in, prepared food for him, and the protagonist ate like a starving tiger. A person who had gone hungry for 19 years finally had a satisfying meal.
Although Jean Valjean was prepared for everything by the priest, from utensils to a warm bed, he couldn't let down his guard. Having suffered so much in this world, Jim didn't believe there were such good people, and he even suspected that the priest had ulterior motives. Taking advantage of the darkness, he stole all the belongings and left, but he was caught by the police before he could go far. With ample evidence, Jean Valjean knew that he could not escape the fate of imprisonment once again. However, what Jean Valjean could not have imagined was that the priest said that all those belongings were a voluntary gift from him. Then, the priest gave him a pair of expensive candlesticks, saying that he had left in such a hurry that he didn't have time to take them. (B02sd76HKJ)
The police, having no other choice, had to release Jean Valjean. As they left, the priest looked at him pensively and said, 'I hope you can use these items to become a good and upright person.' These words deeply shocked Jean Valjean. It turned out that the world was not completely corrupt; there were still good people, willing to trust and help others.
However, a deep, unrelenting pain still stirred within Jean Valjean. Even though he received help, he could not forget that he had once been a thief, having lost his conscience. Could he change his fate, or had he fallen into an abyss that could not be salvaged?
Because of a loaf of bread, he lost 20 years. But when he deeply hated the world, the priest's kindness touched his soul. Teaching him what love is, he decided to discard the paper proving him a thief. He wanted to completely let go of the past and start a new life. (C02jkdf667H)
In the blink of an eye, eight years had passed. By this time, Jean Valjean had completely transformed, becoming a member of the upper class. He not only opened a garment factory with over several hundred female workers but also successfully rose to the position of mayor. In the factory, there was an incredibly beautiful female worker named Fantine. However, beauty is often accompanied by misfortune. When she became pregnant, her boyfriend abandoned her. To support her daughter, she had no choice but to endure the harassment of her supervisor to keep her job. The other female workers, jealous of her beauty, frequently bullied her. When they discovered that she had an illegitimate child, they banded together to demand her dismissal
This argument was accidentally overheard by Jean Valjean. Fantine cried out to him for help, but when Jean Valjean was about to intervene, he looked up and saw the newly assigned inspector. This inspector was none other than the former prison warden. Jean Valjean was startled and began to feel uneasy. Fearing that the inspector might recognize him, he instructed the supervisor to resolve the conflict between the girls. However, this could be the decision he would regret the most in his life. (D01hdh767HH)
As soon as he turned his face away, the group of female workers began to attack Fantine. They relentlessly hurled spiteful words at the supervisor. This supervisor was not a good person either. When he found out she had a child, he did a complete 180. He despised the woman and fired her without much thought.
Jean Valjean tried to stay calm and walked towards the inspector. After so many years apart, Javert did not recognize him. This superior was a former convict, but he felt a sense of familiarity. At that moment, there was a cry for help outside. The two of them went outside and found an overturned carriage, with an old man trapped underneath. Without hesitation, Jean Valjean lifted the carriage. The inspector, seeing this, was astonished. A person with such strength, he had only encountered one person like that before. (A03uf89HBH)
The inspector began to suspect that the escaped convict from years ago still hadn’t been caught, and that the mayor was very likely him. Of course, Jean Valjean wasn’t foolish enough to sit still and let himself be tied up. He knew that every move he made would be closely watched, so Valjean quickly calculated his next steps in his mind. He decided he had to act quickly, find a way to avoid detection, and prevent himself from being exposed. (B03jdsfHG67)
Fantine lost her job and was forced to wander aimlessly. She also had to care for her sick daughter. Surrounded by temptations, she began to believe that anything was worth doing as long as it brought money. Her first step was to sell her hair for just 10 coins. Tears streamed down her face; the game was over. She then continued to sell each of her teeth just to pay rent. By this point, her fate had been crushed to the very bottom of society. Relentless voices echoed in her ears, urging her to earn money even in her sleep. "Old men, young men—there was no difference. Rich or poor, in the darkness, they were all the same." Swallowing her tears, Fantine officially entered the world of prostitution, using her body as capital. The pain and humiliation were unbearable. Once a radiant and beautiful young woman, she had fallen to the lowest depths of society in just a single day. In her eyes now was endless despair, a bottomless abyss with no escape.
The next evening, the supervisor went to a dark alley and encountered Fantine, the woman he had secretly desired for so long. His animalistic instincts took over, and he sought to humiliate her to satisfy his vile lust. It was he who had driven her life into utter misery. Enraged beyond measure, Fantine scratched his face viciously. At that very moment, Javert was patrolling the area. Seeing a man and a woman fighting on the street, he immediately stepped in. The nobleman hastily accused Fantine, claiming that she had suddenly attacked him. Noticing the clear scratches on the man's face, Inspector Javert, with his supreme confidence and extensive experience, instantly concluded that the evidence was undeniable. He prepared to arrest Fantine. Fantine knelt down, tears streaming down her face, pleading for mercy. But Javert remained cold and resolute: "In my 20 years on the job, I've heard enough of these same stories. Stop pretending to be blind in a storm or insane beyond reason. Save your energy for hard labor instead. (C03jkds96JKU)
Fortunately, Jean Valjean happened to pass by and immediately recognized the girl as one of his workers. He approached her and asked why she had ended up in such a situation. The girl, filled with resentment, told him it was all because of him. It turned out that on that day, when all the other workers bullied her, Jean Valjean ignored it, leading to her being fired by the supervisor. But now, her daughter was sick and needed money urgently, so under the influence of temptation, she had fallen into prostitution. The young man who was beaten was the supervisor, who had forced her to serve him, and in her extreme anger, she had scratched him. After hearing her story, Jean Valjean blamed himself. He embraced her, took her to the hospital, and promised to save her daughter
The next day, Javert received news from the Paris police department regarding the escaped prisoner from many years ago. Javert was certain that Mayor Madeline was the former prisoner. However, a letter from headquarters stated that they had captured that prisoner, and after the trial, he would be executed. Javert sought out the mayor to apologize for wrongly accusing him. Jean Valjean told Javert not to blame himself, because after all, he was just doing his duty. (D03jd73HJH)
After he left, Jean Valjean sat there, lost in thought. On one hand, someone had taken the blame for him, becoming the lifeline that allowed him to change his life. But on the other hand, the innocent person was suffering terribly just because he resembled Valjean. If Valjean confessed, his hundreds of workers would lose their jobs, facing a fate similar to the girl from yesterday. But if he remained silent, he would live with the guilt for the rest of his life.
While he was mentally struggling, he saw the candlesticks that the bishop had given him years ago. When he was in despair, the bishop had given him hope. Now, he wanted to pass on that hope to the innocent person. He rushed straight to the court and told them that he was the real fugitive, and the homeless man in front of them was just a scapegoat. However, no one believed that the high and mighty mayor could be a fugitive. Jean Valjean said they should let the inspector come to the hospital to identify him. At that moment, the truth would be revealed.
At the hospital, the girl was in a comatose state due to malnutrition and her mental collapse, and she was about to leave this world. At that moment, her greatest concern was her daughter. Jean Valjean swore to her that as long as he lived, he would not let the child suffer. The girl smiled and departed from this world (A04jkd83JIJIH)
At that moment, the inspector caught up and confirmed that the man before him was indeed the criminal Jean Valjean. Jean Valjean pleaded with the inspector, asking for three days to find Fantine's daughter and make proper arrangements, promising to return afterward. However, the inspector refused, convinced that a leopard can't change its spots—as a criminal, Valjean's deceitful nature could never be changed, and the girl was merely a ploy to help him escape. Seeing that Javert wouldn't believe him, with no other choice left, Jean Valjean leaped into the river to flee.
At this moment, Fantine's daughter was living with the innkeeper and his wife. The couple accepted money from Fantine to take care of the girl, but they treated Cosette worse than a servant. They had a daughter named Éponine, who was always treated like a princess. Late at night, the innkeeper's wife still forced Cosette to go into the deep forest to fetch water. (B04jf3JJ)
There, the girl met Jean Valjean. Seeing a stranger, she hid behind a tree in fear. Jean Valjean reassured her that her mother had entrusted him to rescue her from this earthly hell. He used a large sum of money to redeem her freedom from that family and promised that from now on, wherever he went, he would take her with him. However, Jean Valjean knew that although the girl's presence gave him hope and a reason to live, the road ahead was still very uncertain. Even so, Cosette continued to follow him.
At this moment, the innkeeper and his wife realized that Jean Valjean was a criminal. Had they known earlier, they would have demanded much more money. It seemed that, even so, they still considered themselves to be quite good people. (C04sjd983HI)
That evening, Jean Valjean happened to encounter several squads searching for him. They were running away while the police were in pursuit. Eventually, the two were cornered, but fortunately, the wall on the other side was part of a cemetery at a church, and the gravekeeper was the old man whom Jean Valjean had saved before.
To repay the life-saving favor, he arranged for them to stay at the church, living incognito and starting a new life. Javert was furious because he had once again let a criminal escape. He swore to the heavens that he would spend his life to capture Jean Valjean and bring him to justice. Nine years passed in the blink of an eye, and an organization for the poor workers organized a street protest. Their organization included many young men from the noble class. (D04jsj76HGY)
At that moment, the army arrived to quell the rebellion, and a soldier accidentally shot a woman, triggering immediate violence. Households everywhere began throwing household items down into piles. However, not long after, the Communist Party that Marius was following was suppressed. These students were no match for the government. A few hours into the battle, they were already cornered in a dead-end.
That night, Javert disguised himself and infiltrated the rebel army. He intended to use false information to deceive them but was discovered by a young boy.
At this point, the army had advanced and launched a fierce attack, with a large number of soldiers ambushing from all directions. The rebels quickly fell into a disadvantageous position. Seeing the hopeless situation, Marius took out a barrel of gunpowder, intending to die together with the enemy, which frightened them into retreating(A05jd678JH)
Amid the chaos, Éponine disguised herself as a man. To protect Marius, she took a bullet for him. Before dying, she handed Marius a letter from Cosette. This girl, like a lotus in the mud that remained untainted, ultimately died in the arms of the man she loved.
After reading the letter, Marius discovered Cosette's feelings for him. He wrote about his revolutionary ideals and his love for her, turning them into a letter addressed to her. That night, a young boy delivered the letter to the correct address, but unfortunately, to the wrong person.
Seeing this letter, Jean Valjean felt conflicted, knowing that his daughter was slipping away from him. However, the young man was in danger, and he couldn’t bear to see his daughter unhappy. For her happiness, Jean Valjean had no choice but to save Marius.
That night, Jean Valjean donned a government soldier’s uniform and stealthily made his way to the frontlines. Just as the government forces launched a surprise attack, Jean Valjean swiftly dealt with the enemies.
In the crowd, he recognized a familiar face. The former inspector had unfortunately been captured by the revolutionaries. Jean Valjean begged them to let him handle the inspector, and they naturally agreed. He took Javert to the back and cut his bonds. Javert sneered at Jean Valjean, saying, "Once a thief, always a thief. You just want to use my life to trade for yours. Truly, no good deed goes unpunished." But Jean Valjean replied that he was letting him go unconditionally. He understood that Javert was merely fulfilling his duty, and he had never hated him. While Javert firmly upheld harsh punishment for evil, Jean Valjean believed in kindness as a way to resolve all malice.
The morning comes, and the rebels realize that other groups have been defeated, leaving only them. However, the people have yet to join their cause. While everyone is still debating whether to continue the fight or not, a young boy once again reignites passion in everyone. Do you hear that song? It is the song of the people's outrage. It is the song of the people who no longer want to be oppressed. It is the rejection of slavery.
The rebels continue to advance, raising their weapons high. The gunpowder had been soaked by yesterday's rain, and to retrieve the gunpowder, an unfortunate young boy was shot dead by the enemy's army. The enemy commander had offered them a chance to surrender, but the rebels were still determined to fight to the end for their ideals.
The cannons fired continuously, and the people around, to preserve their lives, immediately shut the doors of their homes. The defense line was easily broken, and the group of students, some dead, others wounded. In the final moment, Marius still raised the flag high, and then he was shot and thrown outside. Jean Valjean had already predicted this outcome, and in the chaos, he saved the young man, taking him to escape through the sewer.
The inspector went to the battlefield and saw the boy lying on the ground. He was moved with emotion, and Javert took the medal from his chest and pinned it onto the boy, perhaps feeling that this child deserved honor more than himself. He heard a noise from the nearby waterway, indicating that his implacable enemy was still alive.
Jean Valjean did not expect that on the other side, the inspector had been waiting there since early. He begged Javert for a moment, promising that he would return after arranging things for the young man. The inspector refused, saying, "If you take another step, I will kill you," but Jean Valjean still bravely walked forward. The two men looked at each other, and then Jean Valjean quickly left. (B05js876JK)
After letting Jean Valjean go, Javert immediately started to doubt himself. He couldn't believe that he had betrayed the law, betrayed justice. Could it be that there was another power, greater than the law, within justice? If so, then what was the point of all his persistence? Faced with this chaotic world, Javert couldn't bear it anymore and jumped into the river to end his life.
The young man, after waking up, returned to the old battlefield. Everyone was dead, and there were drops of blood on the ground that hadn't dried yet, blood from his comrades. Then, Marius met his love. Looking at this couple, Jean Valjean knew that his mission had come to an end. He told the young man all his experiences. As a convict, he could no longer stay with the girl; if caught, their future would be dark. So, he left, carrying all his grievances, and the young man promised to keep this secret for Jean Valjean.
Not long after, the two got married. At the wedding, they learned from the mouths of the Thénardier couple that it was Jean Valjean who saved her that day, so that she could see the light of day. The young man immediately took the girl to find Jean Valjean. At that time, he was sitting in the church with two candlesticks in front of him. Jean Valjean had given all his love to his daughter Cosette. To him, Cosette was everything, the embodiment of love, so after leaving Cosette, he felt incredibly lonely and heartbroken.

He had completed his mission, and it felt as if his soul had been drained. In the moments close to death, he encountered the illusion of the female worker. The couple, Marius and his wife, rushed to him and knelt at Jean Valjean's feet, deeply moved by the sacrifices he had made all these years. Seeing the couple so affectionate, Jean Valjean shared his final confession in their tears. His life had finally been redeemed. He handed his daughter a letter telling the truth about his life. His soul was ready to ascend to heaven, and the guide leading him was the kind priest who had saved him all those years ago.
Under the sky of the future, those who sacrificed for freedom stand under the sunlight, raising their voices in song. Les Misérables is a masterpiece by the great French author Victor Hugo, a timeless epic of its era. This story is about a person and how they rise from hatred to become someone who knows how to love. In the first half of his life, he endured much bitterness, but after meeting the factory worker and the priest, he understood that there was still much injustice in the world. Jean Valjean also used his life to prove the priest’s faith in him. Compared to changing a regime, changing a soul is a much harder task. Suffering is not worthy of praise, but love and redemption are worth being remembered forever. Thank you all for following this film, and we hope that these values will always remain in each of our lives. Let us continue to spread love and kindness, just as Jean Valjean did, to create a better world for the generations to come. (D05kj83HG)
