Top Three Favorite Books of 2024
1. I Who Have Never known Men by Jacqueline Harpman
This story begins with a young woman who is imprisoned with 39 other women in a cage where they are not allowed to speak, touch, and have any privacy. The plot follows the women's liberation from the cage and shows their fear when deciding to stay in the cage or take the risk to see what was left behind in their long forgotten world. The story is similar to Plato's "Allegory of the cave" in the sense that the women have to break free of their restraints and face the truths of the world. This book demonstrates what would happen in a true dystopian world.
2. Babel by R.F. Kuang
This book is about a boy named Robin Swift who was taken from his homeland in China and moved to England with the intent for him to study and learn various languages. He eventually goes to Babel, the top university where he meets new friends but he also learns some horrific truths about the school. He faces the decision of living rich above the rest of society or doing the right thing and fighting against the injustices of Babel. This book conveys the value of education and learning languages.
3. Comfort Me With Apples by Catherynne M. Valente
The story starts out with a picture perfect husband and wife, Sophia and Adam. Sophia strives to do everything right for Adam like cleaning and being obedient but soon she notices more and more strange things about her husband. He begins to stay at work late and Sophia grows more curious about their locked basement. This book covers themes of control and violence for women. It also shows how people turn a blind eye to abuse.
